Rising junior in fcps w 3.3 w gpa: what colleges?

Anonymous
My dd just finished sophomore year with a 3.3 weighted gpa. Essentially she had all Bs, one A and 1 C in Algebra 2.

She has weekly tutoring but has always struggled a bit academically.

She is going to be taking the SAT, let’s say it’s a 1200 based on psat.

Besides the VA schools that might be targets/reaches (Christopher Newport, vcu, maybe gmu not stem, Radford, odu, longwood), what other schools does she have a chance at? What else should we be targeting?

Also trying not to spend more than say $60k all in/year, and stay on the east coast if possible. (Maybe central time zone states too.)

Thank you for posting this. My kid is in the same boat and I would be eager to hear suggestions on schools where they might get merit aid.

I would look at Longwood, Old Dominion, UMW, Radford, and VCU but keep in mind that some popular majors typically require a higher gpa. GMU engineering, comp sci, Schar school, etc. are getting more competitive. UVA, VT, W&M, and JMU would be unlikely. Maybe consider UVa Wise to C’ville option?

Longwood and CNU are good for this type of student. VCU is not.

My rising senior has lower stats. Obviously can't speak to how successful but will be applying to at least: ECU, WVU, ODU and Coastal. $60k/yr, you could afford nearly every OOS public.
With a budget of $60k/yr you could certainly include some mid tier privates

We will be looking at UNC-Wilmington and Univ Dayton (might get merit there). Also MIami of Ohio.

Consider some of the schools in the south such as Ole Miss, Mississippi State and possibly Alabama. Maybe Elon, though I think the school is becoming more competitive.if full pay, may be able to squeak in with strong essays. Definitely Mary Washington and Longwood.

Look at the Jesuit schools (beyond Georgetown and BC). Loyola in New Orleans, Xavier in Cincinnati, Marquette in Milwaukee, St. Joe’s in Philly, etc. Typically generous with merit aid, usually lots of supports available if students need them.
