You just made that up. Number of public schools, particularly in South and Midwest that are OOS full pay under $50k.

This is actually a cool position to be in because you can skip all the typical dc nonsense regarding school prestige. You have a lot of choices. Butler and Marquette are good options. Any of the non-flagship public universities will be good options - but factor in whether you like people from those areas - they tend to have a high concentration of kids from that state and the alumni network and job placement stuff will be centered around that state.

Cant speak to Butler and Marquette but for rest of the post this is SPOT ON. There are some schools that are heavily out of state that may not limit you geographically after graduation like WVU and Coastal Carolina.

Our kid is in a similar position and we're encouraging him to think about where he wants to live after graduation and apply to school in that area

Be careful with U of Tampa. The graduation and freshman retention rates are terrible. Despite its low acceptance rate, it's not selective based on academic talent but on who can afford to pay full freight. The endowment is puny, and housing is a yearly issue.

+1 on the housing issue at U of Tampa. Our friends' DC almost went there but backed out because of the housing mess.

What about FIU instead? Great for hospitality + an interesting and diverse student body.

Or Ithaca? Long winter with grey weather, but beautiful setting if DC can handle the cold.

Instead of Tampa, maybe consider Flagler, in St Augustine? It’s a really pretty campus, with some really cool old buildings similar to Tampa’s student union, and the school’s finances are considered to be stable. It’s consistently ranked high among regional colleges in the South.

Op here. Thanks for all the awesome suggestions!

Also, to the person who said it will be more than $60k for oos, this is not true for my older kid at an out of state school. There are options under $50k/year (tuition and room and board) everywhere. You just have to research.

I wish this would be the case but I don’t think schools will be forgoing on the $$. They will just accept more international students.

I'd be careful with Washington and Jefferson-they look like their on their way out with enrollment issues and a small endowment. Same with Juniata, Chatham (whose really in crisis), and Susquehana. The private liberal arts colleges are really taking a tumble in debts

That's true. I know some recent grads and current students - I don't know if the schools are in immediate danger (during the student's enrollment), although being an alum of a college that will exist in the longterm is certainly more appealing.

W&J just got an enormous donation last year. I wouldn't count them out so fast. They were a strong contender for us last year and we toured and really enjoyed the college. Went with another choice, but it DD had been a little more sporty, they might have been our pick

Western Carolina would be well in that price range.

Sweet Briar, if she doesnt mind small.

Bump. Kid is in a similar situation. Any more schools to recommend?

Surprised to see Ithaca not mentioned more. Good for that profile and has some real gem programs and beautiful athletic facilities.

How do moderators know what your kid's GPA is if you don't share it?

They don’t. I follow the group because even though my kid is above their official stats, DC is closer to average for our HS so I still find some of the discussions useful. I simply don’t share stats. And plenty of people discuss their kids with higher stats, you’re just supposed to make it clear in your post that you’re talking about your non awesomely average kid.
