Is total body transformation possible at 52 with the help of a trainer?

Anonymous
I am a 5’4” woman weighing 178 pounds and have been this overweight for about 10 years. I walk plenty but vigorous exercise has not been part of my life since my late 20s. At 52, I have hit my limit to how much longer I can keep going at this weight and lack of exercise without developing health problems. I have started Zepbound and plan to hire a trainer. I’m wondering if anyone can weigh in with their own experience of making a major transformation at this age with the help of a trainer and nutritionist. Any and all experiences shared will be most welcome. How long did it take? How did you find a trainer who could provide results?

Hey congrats!! If you work with a trainer and lift regularly you will completely change how you feel. I’m not sure what your body will look like but you’ll feel amazing and strong.

Yes - it is. Almost 50 woman here. 2.5 years into a journey - 80 lbs down (maintained over past 16 months), stronger than ever. Believe it’s possible

PP here - embrace it as truly a lifestyle shift (including - and most importantly- your mindset and self-talk). And as a gift to yourself, not deprivation. Focus on how you’re feeding yourself. Bulk / nutritionally dense food. not calorically heavy / nutritionally empty foods.

I am in my 50s. I lost 50 pounds with Wegovy and major diet changes and walking. I'm now trying to build muscle. I am doing it on my own for now, at home with weights and strength training videos on the Peloton app. I worked with a dietician for weight loss and some health issues and that was extremely helpful.

Hi, I'm with you. 53 and in a similar place, although I have already hit health issues, and I started Wegovy instead of Zepbound.

My weight is due to medication and I've lost almost all of it twice, which tells you that ... I have gained all of it back, twice. I do believe that if I'd had a solid exercise habit, I would have had a much, much better chance of keeping it off. On that note, exercise is important for maintaining, less so for losing. But it sounds like you have the diet/Zepbound portion of this under control. And don't ever forget -- the health benefits of exercise are huge (and necessary for folks at our age) whether you lose weight or not. The trainer will be good to 1) help you figure out what to do and not injure yourself doing it, and 2) most important -- create accountability. You can't not exercise if you have an appointment with your trainer.

I salute you, I truly do. And to answer your question -- yes, it is certainly possible. And I'm with you! Sending you healthy, healing vibes of support.

I’ve seen men do it in as little as 6 months. Not sure of total weight loss - but transformed from an out of shape 50 year old to an “after photo” for any health product type look.

But he was hard core on diet and exercise- he seems to have kept close to that shape for over a year now.

For a woman trying to build muscle from very little a year would be a reasonable target - but if you have extra skin or things like that surgery is your only option at some point.

Pick a photo of someone close your age that you like their body and use that as a target- obviously you will never look exactly like them but that level or fitness for your body and see what your trainer thinks. They would have best insight to evaluate.

You should start weight lifting to improve your bone density and extend your longevity. Best thing you can do for yourself. Whether you lose weight, is beside the point.

I started weight training, crossfit and yoga also. Im going to try pilates too. Mainly though it was eating better - just paying attention, so i lost about a pound a week. I was quite overweight at the time but didnt care or pay attention. It all changed a year and a half ago when i met the most handsome and amusing man who is 20 years younger.

Did i get the guy? Yes. Yes i did haha!

Never had motivation before. Never saw the inside of a gym before or cared about calories...
