Good safety schools for those who like W&M?

No, it’s getting way less selective and on the decline.

Applications were up 23%, and SAT, ACT, Top 10% and average GPA all increased for Fall 2021.

+1. SCHEV reports that the 75th percentile enrolling last fall had a 4.46 and an ACT of 34. It’s become very difficult to get into.

With a 3.8 UW, 1500+ SAT and some decent EC’s he’s wondering if he should apply ED to improve chances of being admitted. We feel he should give other schools consideration in case he gets merit aid - any thoughts? Safeties to consider? DS is interested in foreign relations and government.

Your kid sounds like mine- down to the interests, but we have another year to go.
We toured this summer and talked with an admissions counselor.
We haven't found any other schools similar to W&M.
Fewer applications for ED= better chances.
I am afraid that we will have to do ED when the time comes... and I'm with you on thinking about the possible merit aid at other schools.

I think that William & Mary has a lot of scholarship money now.

They have increased financial aid significantly for low and lower middle income families. I don't think there is significantly more merit.

Chances are good if like OP your stats are in range (stats for men don't seem to be that different from women, but the acceptance rates are higher), but still need a safety. But if you do ED1, you will know the result before RD for other schools. A common thing to do in NoVA is that if you like W&M over UVA but like both, do W&M ED1 and UVA and other targets EA and choose a safety with rolling admissions. (Though if you think your GPA will go up with Senior Fall grades, wait for RD for UVA as they are very GPA focused).

But the main point is that you get your results on your key targets and favorites before you choose your safeties. If you get in to W&M, you don't have to think anymore. But if you don't, in my kids and their friends' experiences, the choice of new targets and safeties sort of gets shuffled all again. Kids who couldn't find other targets/safeties they liked suddenly found many. That they now loved even better than W&M! (human nature!) So having a lot of potential safeties lined up--seeing their requirements etc. is essential, but they don't have to select them or yet love them until the results from ED are in--as long as they are able to block some time in for apps between finding out ED Dec 15 and applying Jan 1, or have done more prep work before.

Middle 50 SAT composite for Fall 2021 entering class is 1520 for 75th percentile and 1370 for 25th percentile. 1520 composite is the 99th percentile and 1370 is the 92nd percentile. Average GPA is 4.30. William and Mary doesn't get the high numbers of students applying as some other schools, but has a pretty strong applicant pool from a stat perspective. The numbers have probably gone up in part for 2021 because submitting standardized tests is optional.

That’s a good school but not a safety for anyone.

In Virginia? Safeties might be Mary Washington or one of the many private liberal arts colleges.

Not really a safety, though.
