At W&M, the middle bar of SATs 1300-1490, middle ACT 30-34. That means a full quarter of the students are in the 99.9%ile for standardized tests. It may not be Harvard, but most of us need a safety.

I agree with you, but 1490 is the 97th percentile.

Not according to this chart: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/understanding-sat-scores.pdf

The SAT user is the more important number, so 98th.
Okay, so a quarter are above that in 2020 scores. And similar for past decade. Same point.

With the move to standardized tests optional, which is likely here to stay, the middle 50 is moving to 1370-1520 SAT composite for the incoming class. 1520 is 99th percentile. 1370 is 92nd percentile for SAT user.

The ones in state that might seem the most similar are Mary Washington and Christopher Newport. JMU is quite a bit bigger.

I don't think they were serious. With their stats, neither one is realistically a safety for very many applicants. And you also probably have to apply early to increase your chances.

The schools that are most like William and Mary (size, academics, largely residential) are primarily private. Public schools tend to be either significantly larger or not at a similar level academically.

Miami of Ohio is one of the few public schools similar in size to William and Mary , but is way easier for admissions (80%+ acceptance rate) and more of a party school (huge fraternity/sorority scene).

Anyone know anything about The College of New Jersey? It seems to have some similarities, definitely similar in size.

It is more similar to JMU in size. It has a nice campus.

NJ native here. Yes, CNJ definitely qualifies as a poor man's William & Mary. Only 7 percent of its students are from out of state and they're working to increase that so it's actually easier to get in from out of state than in. They also offer merit aid.

Of course, it's got nowhere near the reputation of William & Mary. But in the tri-state area it's highly regarded.

You're not a Virginia resident.

I am, and I would not want my kid who just missed W&M to go to UMW.

Great! More room for my kid. Everyone I know who attended UMW loved it and is either employed or in grad school.

Good school but very regional. It's as New Jersey as a fist pump.

It is? NJ native here and I have never heard of it - is it the former Trenton State? If so, I would hardly call it “highly regarded” in NJ - the state flagship Rutgers is barely highly regarded by many NJ residents.

A safety wouldn't be at a similar level academically.
