Juneteenth a Federal holiday? What do you think?

Why not both?

Because the 13th Amendment took effect on December 18, and that's an impractical date to have a federal holiday.

I don't care that Juneteenth's origin is specific to Texas. If they're going to add a holiday to the calendar they could do a lot worse than June.

So now our country will have two separate Independence Days, just 15 days apart. This is incredibly divisive.

In theory, it should not be decisive at all. Not at all.

However, given the fact that July 4th was recently politicized, I would not be surprised if "journalists" hinted one is good, and one isnt. Because they love drama.

This is a holiday to recognize an important event in *our* country.

The new holiday is for everyone, with each to celebrate in their own way. Rehoboth, here we come!

That's an excellent date for a federal holiday!!! I'd love to have 3 or 4 federal holidays the last 2 weeks of December. Imagine 100 years from now, kids off on winter break, watching parades on TV drinking cocoa on Dec 18th. I love having a long break that time of year so I can really savor the holidays. Same with Thanksgiving. I usually take at a minimum Wednesday to Friday off to get in spirit etc. When a holiday is only 1 day, it's different.

How are you posting here if you were killed by police?

Hey, but you’ve just identified the reason for a holiday in March or April. Maybe we’ll have the “mass shooting by assault weapon” Memorial Day holiday in April and March can be the “I’m a criminal / rioter that was abused by and occasionally killed by police” holiday. Then we’ll have a holiday for every month and some will even have two. Oh wait, I forgot about August. Let’s have a holiday for the day we dropped the bomb. We’ll call it the “this is what justified, bean-counter mass murder really looks like” holiday.

Sound good?

You are probably the most ignorant poster on this thread and that’s saying a lot. Congrats!

I take that as a compliment. And if you can’t tell this was a joke post, then you need to lighten up. The post I responded too was the dumb post, so I mocked it by being even more stupid. Man, there are some really low IQ people on this forum who have faux maturity and intelligence.

I think it’s fine! A good cause to celebrate, and helps validate millions & millions of Americans.

I’m sure this sounded really good in your head - and you thought you were making some clever point. It does not come across clearly. A generous read would be that you think we have too many holidays and don’t believe that the end of human slavery in this country is worth celebrating as one. That isn’t a good look.

Hopefully this new holiday will trigger a little more self-reflection in future generations.

Not trying to be clear, simpleton. That’s pretty obvious. I am mocking the post about killer cops, and this holiday’s purpose. It is a joke. We give a holiday to slaves like that is going to repair racism, but not to the entire nation of native Americans we wiped off the map. Why? Because the folks on the reservation don’t vote. It is a hypocritical and meaningless farce. But, again, I will enjoy the day off along with the celebration of a false prophet on Dec 25th, a now completely convoluted Columbus/Indigenous Day in Oct., Labor Day (random). I assume at some point Presidents’ Day will be removed due to the clearly racist past of GW and even AL, who despite issuing the edict to free slaves, thought they were an inferior sub-species.

As far as self-reflection, what does that even mean? I did not enslave anyone. Nor did my ancestors who came here as immigrants in the late 19th century. I’ve always know slavery was wrong. This does not awaken me to the plight of enslaved people, as that was known already. This is a vapid, political gesture triggered by a need to be liked and re-elected. But hey, I feel so much better now that the feds have made up yet another holiday. Yippee.

Who is being divided? Do you also find it incredibly divisive to have two separate federal holidays to honor people who served in the US military, or is that not divisive because one is in May and the other is in November?

FFS there is only one federal holiday, Veterans Day, for people who served in the military. Memorial Day is for those killed while serving. Good god.

They're both for people who served in the military.

You're right. Memorial day should honor all those who died in service for our country, military and civilian. That doesn't mean we should get rid of it though.

What civilians should Memorial Day honor?

CIA, State, AID, and civilian DOD to name a few. Amb. Stevens (Benghazi) for example.

No thanks. I am not going to honor guys like William Cooper and Wallace "Buzz" Sawyer and they should not be honored with a Federal holiday.

I’ll never turn down a holiday and a day off from work! The more the merrier. And, I am happy to celebrate the end of slavery.

Sometimes - when you find yourself on DCUM replying to multiple people saying your prior post is dumb and poorly thought out - it might be worth considering the possibility that they are right.

The total lack of internal consistency in your arguments (stating no holiday for native Americans and then complaining about indigenous peoples day.... in the same paragraph), the faulty and simplistic reasoning (my ancestors arrived in 19C, therefore I can’t have benefited from an unjust society that treats races unequally and provides more opportunity for some than others) mean you are either a teenager, an adult-child, or a troll trying to sound stupid to get a reaction. Your other response to a reply to your prior post makes me think troll - so signing off and won’t reply to you any longer.

Good point. I felt really low key about July 4th ever since kneeling before the flag became a thing. I really with Colin K had found a different vehicle for protest. It sucked a lot of life out of Americana.

So why honor Juneteenth, which was only about freeing slaves in Texas? Why not the 13th amendment anniversary, that ended slavery in the USA? All slaves, just not the ones in Texas.

Anonymous wrote:I would like it better if it wasn’t called Juneteenth. June 19th sounds good. Can we just combine it with MLK day? We are heading toward a lot of holidays. Besides the usual days, our school system takes off Christian, Jewish and Muslim holidays. I think we should cut Presidents’ Day or Columbia Day or Easter Monday.

Did you actually just ask if we could combine MLK Day and Juneteenth? How about first we combine Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

I would be in favor of eliminating MLK day and combining Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Except it didn’t end slavery on that date, because it took that long for the news to travel to all who had been freed. Nobody got a text alert on their phone about it.
