Juneteenth a Federal holiday? What do you think?

This is great and well deserved. We need more holidays even though I am not sure what this day is for... But I will take it.

Bunch of GOP state legislatures hard at work making sure kids can't learn what it's for either.

I'm old enough to remember when Republican state legislators opposed MLK Day on grounds that he was a communist rabble-rouser. Now instead they pretend that his work begins and ends with "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

I’d rather have legislation that holds police accountable for killing us.

Agreed. But as Trevor Noah just said - it’s symbolism, but that ain’t nothing.

IMO - Police personal accountability (ie: their pension funds not the taxpayers used to settle lawsuits - blue wall of silence will come down a whole lot quicker then). National registry of police officers (including complaints/use of lethal force/firings and reassignments). Higher pay (need to attract better candidates than some of the power-hungry mouth breathers they currently get). Lots of work to do there, including dismantling the structures they think they are protecting - a new national holiday may help with that.

Who doesn’t want another holiday? Can we add one to March and April too now, as those months are holiday deserts. Anyhow, it is a meaningless gesture. It does not repair slavery. It is a political stunt to garner future votes, but hey if we all get a day off, I am down with it.

Nothing less than a time machine would do that.

How are you posting here if you were killed by police?

Hey, but you’ve just identified the reason for a holiday in March or April. Maybe we’ll have the “mass shooting by assault weapon” Memorial Day holiday in April and March can be the “I’m a criminal / rioter that was abused by and occasionally killed by police” holiday. Then we’ll have a holiday for every month and some will even have two. Oh wait, I forgot about August. Let’s have a holiday for the day we dropped the bomb. We’ll call it the “this is what justified, bean-counter mass murder really looks like” holiday.

Sound good?

Get rid of Memorial Day and Veterans Day to have Juneteenth. By the way what a stupid name. Is this real ?

I’m sure this sounded really good in your head - and you thought you were making some clever point. It does not come across clearly. A generous read would be that you think we have too many holidays and don’t believe that the end of human slavery in this country is worth celebrating as one. That isn’t a good look.

Hopefully this new holiday will trigger a little more self-reflection in future generations.

I think that if they really cared about Juneteenth, they would have done this a month ago so everyone could enjoy a holiday. If we do get tomorrow off, I think a lot of us will be shocked. Will my daycare close? Will dh get extra pay for a federal holiday?

I would prefer Emancipation Day as the holiday. Juneteenth is just a sad reminder that the racism marched on and should be celebrated in Texas.

VA had this a state holiday last year. See, we "care".

You're really going all in on the instant gratification here.

You are probably the most ignorant poster on this thread and that’s saying a lot. Congrats!

Do you mean DC’s Emancipation Day? Didn’t impact enslaved people anywhere else in the US. Juneteenth marks the end of mass enslavement across this nation.

This was my thought too.

It should be a shameful day for TX for dragging their feet 2 whole years after the fact.
