I’m making the leap from Va to Maryland

McLean>Vienna>Bethesda>Chevy CHase>Silver Spring

I also went to UMD so I am well familiar with the area and you'd have to put a gun to my head to get me to live in College Park or Hyattsville.

LOL
VA is a better place to live?? You must be high on drugs or don't like diversity. People only move/live in VA because of jobs.
VA is not desirable place to live.

Lol! You sure are a sharp one, huh?

Lol! Some of the comments on here are making me laugh my ass off. Love the sense of humor. Poor Maryland, she really does get kicked around like a sad dog.

Yeah, it's where a city resident wprotesting against the far right agitators was murdered by an out of towner white supremacist. Be glad it hasn't in your home town, douche bag.

That would only happen in white supremacists friendly city such as Charlottesville.

I think you're confusing Charlottesville with rural Maryland. Unlike in Charlottesville where residents died trying to keep outside white supremacists out of their city, rural Maryland teems with racists and Confederate flags abound.

Well we don't need to go to rural VA to see a plethora of racists and Confederate flags. It's all over

Children, enough! Get a grip- you all look like IDIOTS. Why are you so concerned that your state is so much better than the other? Hate to break the news to you. VA and MD are a lot alike. They both suck.

+100 This is the funniest thread. Half of us are just here for our jobs. And seeing all this arguing about how "my state is better" is just another example of why both states are terrible.

If this is your list for the OP, you clearly are not someone who has a budget similar to that of the OP. I would love to know the "reasons" you dislike College Park and Hyattsville so much.

The "" are loaded with read between the lines.

I just put "" there to emphasize that most people I've met would not use those specific terms to describe any of those areas. I wasn't intending for any read between the lines, whatever that means. All three areas are higher crime than other areas of MoCo like Bethesda, and Bethesda is already between 2x and 4x higher crime than Nova.

What kind of people have you met? Don't tell me, we all know.
No one would ever say that McLean and Vienna are more desirable than Bethesda and Chevy Chase, not even in a million years.

Crime has been getting worse in top neighborhoods in MD and upper middle class is moving out of there due to cap on SALT deduction. This will push more taxes down to middle class and MD could soon have the same fate as IL.

I know reading comprehension is hard, but I said most people I know would not describe OPs three areas as "safe" or "desirable". I then went on to give MY PERSONAL RANKING of the places I have lived, which has been probably more places in the DC area than most people. How many other people do you know that have lived in McLean, Vienna, Bethesda, and Chevy Chase? I bet none.

That's why I asked "what kind of people YOU know and meet?" You don't need to tell us , we all know.
I have known too many people who have lived in those places, including me.

Bethesda is no where close to Arlington. LOL

+1. Just go bestplaces.net/crime and you can compare any two cities. Bethesda vs Vienna double the violent crime. College Park vs Bethesda double violent crime again.

I'm not sure that website fully reflects the situation because it's using some kind of weird "index" that it created itself. If you go to https://www.areavibes.com/crime-comparison/ they have the actual rates of crime per 100k residents. Based on the comparison you just did, it looks a lot worse. Vienna 48/100k violent crime. Bethesda 216/100k. College Park 639/100k!!! This makes Bethesda over four times worse than Vienna, and College Park three times worse than Bethesda. Hyattsville, on the other hand, is "only" double the violent crime of Bethesda.

You racist for saying that.

LOL! What's racist about it? This are just facts about crime. Bring a better point than continue repeating racism on anything. LOL

Exactly! A lot of people who live around here reek of self-importance like the PPs arguing about which state is more racist, which state is richer, which state is more educated, blah blah blah. Here's the truth despite where you live around here: most of us live in crappy and expensive homes, the traffic is unbearable, the summers are muggy and gross, the people are rude and pompous, and despite having good paying jobs, our jobs are boring AF. You all act like you're from some podunk town and you've landed in paradise.

Anonymous wrote:It seems like there are some houses near College Park that are quite inexpensive compared to what they'd cost in NoVa. So your money may go further. It does seem like private school might be required. Realtors in PG don't even bother most of the time to note the school assignments and the web pages for some of the schools, such as Northwestern HS, emphasize that the school has large and growing ESOL and FARMS populations, while not featuring the school's course catalogs. In addition, many will feature communications from the school principals that are full of grammar and syntax errors. It's almost anti-marketing for those who'd want their kids to get a good education.

MoCo (non Silver Spring) resident here so I don't have a dog in this fight but your statement about realtors in PG not bothering to put in school assignments in their listing is false. Just open up any PG listing and you can see for yourself that school assignments are listed there. Next, why would they post the web page of the school in their listing? I've never seen that practice before. Also, there is a course catalog on the PG county school web site: https://www.pgcps.org/courses-and-programs-of-study/. Courses are usually listed at the county level because the courses are available at all schools for the most part. Finally, you really don't get to talk about grammar errors when you yourself can't write a comprehensible post. What are you saying now about Northwestern High School's emphasis on it's growing ESOL and FARMS population?

Your reading comprehension skills are seriously lacking.

PG realtors regularly fail to identify the schools for their listings. That is almost never the case in NoVa or western MoCo.

And it's the school web sites maintained by PGCPS that are underwhelming when it comes to specific course offerings. The link you provided is just a compilation of all the courses that may be offered at PGCPS schools, with the disclaimer that individual schools may not offer all those courses. Other school systems are much clearer as to the courses actually offered at individual schools.

And you wonder why people go private there...

NP - please share an example where they do not list the schools.

You can afford a newish townhouse in the Norbeck Overlook community that feeds into Flower Valley Elementary school- another gem. From Norbeck Overlook, it is a 4-mile drive to Glenmont metro station. Or you can get a single-family home that feeds into Lucy Barnsley or Rock Creek Valley Elementary schools. Glenmont metro will still be around 4 miles away depending on the house location; and some homes are walking distance to Rock Creek Village shopping center. The Rockville HS neighborhoods are truly a hidden little secret. Great family-oriented community and the high school is one of the smaller ones in the county, and not overcrowded either. I regret not buying into this cluster.

Which HS is the Rockville HS cluster?

(I can't speak to other parts of the Rt 1 corridor because I don't go that often but I am sure that it is also fine)

Hyattsville is safe?? Seriously?

Very safe.
Have you ever been in Historic Hyattsville??
Don't be a racist.
