+2 By the way, the McKinsey and Bain partners I know dress pretty bland and maybe even a little frumpy. |

haha, another Londoner with no connection to DC here! I work at a Wall St bank in London, and in my experience, the well put together women are generally wearing Reiss/Hobbs/LK Bennett/Whistles. LK Bennett shoes are de rigueur, the wardrobe has a bit more flex. Unless you are really senior, like Partner level making 7 figures, nobody is wearing true designer clothing like Mouret, McQueen, or anything close to that. However the bags will likely all be proper designer, but many women might well be wearing dresses from the Gap.
Definitely no Boden. I guarantee half the women in London wouldn't even have heard of the brand. I generally associate Boden with a mumsy/frumpy look, not sleek and fashionable. Also at the big 4 consulting level the level of polish will be significantly lower. You could easily get away with head to toe H&M. |
Boden is mostly for SAHMs and teachers, IMO. |
| I am at a huge finance company and FWIW, our GC and CCO, both women in their late 40s, KILL IT almost everyday. The GC had this whole cape blazer situation the other day and I immediately found a knock off online and bought it. |
I was kidding - just playing off the constant hectoring on this website that rich people only wear threadbare clothes (or Old Navy), drive old cars, and ride horses.
I'm happy for OP and while I work from home and do not need a nice wardrobe, I've been happy to see actually helpful advice here. |
| GC at a major finance company = C suite position. Not at all surprised they are super fashionable! |
I bet they are slim |
Yes they are but they aren’t skinny, if that makes sense. Probs a size 8 or 10 |
These sizes are not slim. And I say that as someone who has been both of them, as well as a 4 and a 6. |

I work at a large IT consulting firm and was partner track until mommy track. Besides one super old school partner who only wears St John and Layfayette 148 or whatever the numbers are - no one can tell the difference between Nordstom Rack and more expensive stuff.
Buy 1 classic, seasonless suit with pants, skirt, sheath dress and jacket. If you want to get classic trousers and a slimmer ankle cropped pair of pants go for it. Black or navy. Get a few nice blouses, mostly solid colors so you can wear them for years. Get a few scarves. Once you get a feel for what people wear you can get bright blazers at places like Marshall’s or Nordstom rack to mix into your basics. I swear our CFO only has 5 jackets. She is wearing the same thing every time I see her. Her uniform is black pants, silk shell, statement blazer. Our HR lead’s uniform is sheath dress, chunky gold necklace, dark color blazer, but in a funky architectural cut. |

Np: 8 or 10 in British or American sizing? If British, that’s slimmer than an American 8 or 10. |
Haha. That’s because partners and directors are busy at both work and home. No time to think about how they look. I am sure they want to dress nicely, but there is no time. I know because I am one of them! |
You need to link that garment

e No. Sorry. |
