I have been following these threads on and off since my oldest (now 8th grade) went thru the process and I have NEVER seen so many high scoring dc not get in.
|
NNAT: 111
COGAT: Composite 124, highest component score was math (131) GBRS: (#Consistent / #Frequent / #Occasional) All four consistently, with commentary so amazing I thought they were describing an imaginary child In-Pool: (Y/N) No Parent Referral: (Y/N) Y WISC: - did not take Zip Code: 22043 AAP Decision: (IN / NOT IN) IN! I have to say, I'm pretty happy. I did not take this for granted. Very surprised that so many higher-scoring kids did not get in, and wonder why mine did. Work samples were good but not earth-shattering. Two teacher recs (from RSM and his language teacher). He speaks three languages, maybe that was his hook. Dunno. |
PP here, his DRA is 40. |
NNAT: 140
COGAT: (V / Q / NV / Composite) ?/?/?/composite 121 or so GBRS: (#Consistent / #Frequent / #Occasional) don’t know In-Pool: (Y/N) Y Parent Referral: (Y/N) Y questionnaire only WISC: N/A Zip Code: 20171 AAP Decision: (IN / NOT IN). IN I’m not too surprised even though the COGAT wasn’t great. DD’s teachers expressed confidence about it before I even brought it up. |
I can't find our NNAT scores. DS got rejected with 141 Cogat. (124 V, 145 Q, 132 NV). He was 99th for age and local percentile. I thought DS would have been in. He is an avid reader and loves math. I emailed AART to request the packet that was submitted. |
My child also just got rejected with higher scores than older brother, who was in first round. Older child struggled with reading. My current 2nd grader will read multiple books per day and is a knowledge sponge. This system seems off! |
Move to Alexandria! |
A good letter and strong work samples did the job for us last year. |
Dp here. Who was the letter from? |
NNAT: 119
COGAT: (V / Q / NV / Composite) 112/123/116/ Com 118 GBRS: (#Consistent / #Frequent / #Occasional) 3 F, 1 C In-Pool: (Y/N) N Parent Referral: (Y/N) Y WISC: N/A Zip Code: 22153 AAP Decision: (IN / NOT IN). IN FYI I don't think it's about the number of Frequents vs. Consistents. It's about the teacher comments. DC had two pages of small typed detailed, specific, glowing, creative, outside the box, comments in the GBRS. Plus, DC gets advanced services in Math and Reading and is at a 38 DRA. |
NNAT: 133
COGAT: (V / Q / NV / Composite) 109/131/122 Composite 125 GBRS: (#Consistent / #Frequent / #Occasional) 2 C, 2F In-Pool: (Y/N) Y Parent Referral: (Y/N) Y WISC: N/A Zip Code: 22153 AAP Decision: (IN / NOT IN). IN |
Congrats, but that's crazy compared the scores of those that didn't get in. |
It sounds like there is an over reliance on the teacher’s observations, which is so subjective. Why bother with the tests if they don’t count for anything? |
If you have lots of money, yes. If not, there are other ways. My DS had similar scores and was rejected. Last year we did a WISC and the scores were all over the place with some super high and some just better than average, it wasn’t clear whether it would help or hurt. I hemmed and hawed about whether to include the WISC in the appeal. As luck would have it, my ADD addled brain had me forget to bring the WISC results that day the appeal was due to be postmarked, so all I sent with the appeal was a letter and 2 work samples. It worked. |
