FWIW this isn't our experience re: math instruction and differentiation. Our kid has been very well served on both fronts, and the math instructional coaches keep getting better and better. Sorry you haven't had a good experience, though. |
It seems like in K-2nd they all do the same math and that has been our experience each year. Or at least, there is no way to accelerate in math or to do something more engaging. My kid is bored to tears, literally, and has come to really dislike math class. |
| For those talking about moving in boundary for Deal/Wilson for MS and HS, it’s tough to do if you are buying. |
| ITS continues it have solid middle school performances. This year, the first year to have 40+ in graduating 8th graders, I’ve heard they had double digits in elite privates (Maret, SJC, Gonzaga, Sidwell), double digits at SWW/Banneker/McKinley. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the new head of school. |
Hello ITS administrator. Do you have anything to say about the utter lack of math differentiation? Ooh, elite privates, what a wonderful solution for all of us. ITS equities so hard! Is it you who drives the Tesla in the dropoff line? |
OP - are you zoned to SWWFS or Cardozo for middle school? We are Seaton/SWWFS and that helps in our decision to deal with MS when we get closer to it. |
This has not been my experience at ITS. Back when they were in school, there were small math groups and at least one was assigned enrichment projects to go above and beyond, either a more difficult version of what the class was doing or a separate project altogether. Even very early (K?) when the class was mostly learning about representing numbers up to 100, several kids did projects that were three-digit numbers with multiple hundreds, tens, and ones. During virtual, a math enrichment group remained, and they use at least one online learning platform that allows kids to progress at their own pace. |
Hi! I think we are zoned for Cardozo, but I would love to send my kids to SWWFS for middle. I didn't realize you could be zoned for Seaton and then SWWFS! I will double check our address... |
We had to beg for math enrichment group during DL, and it's only 15 minutes once a week. It seems like pre-COVID, kids who finished their math worksheet got to play with math toys. And in three years at ITS I have literally never seen an interesting math project done by my child. Not sure what grade PP's child is in, but ours is clearly way worse. |
Huh? I’m just a parent of a 7th grader that is impressed and proud of our graduates (most of whom I’ve know since they were 4 year old and have seen them grown into great kids). Why are you such a mean person? |
Yeah that PP seems a tad unhinged...
|
Parent of current ITS 8th grader. I don't think it's correct that there are double digits going to elite privates. Maybe two or three kids. But yeah, will almost definitely be double digits at SWW, Banneker, and Ellington--possibly high double digits, once the Walls waitlist moves. (Not sure about McKinley. None of DC's friends applied there.) |
I think I meant double digits admitted to privates. I know do at least 8 admits so assume there were a few more. |
Is getting into a non-elite private an indication of quality, though? Or does it mean you didn't get into a selective DC high school. |
Idk. The kids I know got admitted to Walls, GDS, Maret, Damatha. So I guess all around. |
