It does happen at every school, but you only hear about the fights at schools like Gaithersburg High. The other schools (the "prime" schools) are better at sweeping these things under the rug.

A kid at Churchill ran over a student with his car when a drug deal went bad.
On another occasion, a student stabbed other students with an art scapple. Sometimes the media reports. Sometimes not. I am sure that is the case across all MCPS schools.

WTF? Seriously?

Yes. This happened. Both the drug dealer and the buyer were students at Churchill. The student who was injured had his friends later retaliate and jumped the student that hurt him. The police were involved with the case. Students remained in school while both students went through legal due process.

when was this?

When Dr. Benz was principal - either last school year or the one before that. She took an instagram photo with a group of boys whom students knew were the boys who collectively jumped the driver of the car. Dr. Benz was clueless.

Dr. Benz is now gone and this incident happened at least 2-3 years ago. A lot of the blame needs to go to MCPS for allowing her to stay in her position for so long. As parents, we were baffled why no one had her removed or at least reassigned to another "job" in the county (I know it is virtually impossible to fire anyone once they have tenure-that in itself is a huge issue).

I’m not a parent. This heartbreaking incident displays the absolutely inexcusable recklessness of so many utterly thoughtless adults and kids who stood there with their phones and lacked autonomy to call 911 or to rip these guys off each other. And the nurse and administrators, are you kidding? No 911?! Have they lost their minds- they should all be tired! This child’s life is in the balance and ignorance and apathy fringed. There is no “deserved it” doctrine, with subpar response because it may have been a “fight.” An injury is an injury and how it is sustained is only relevant to the dr for treatment, not for laypeople to call for an ambulance! It’s almost criminal child neglect! I wish I had money to put my adorable little nephews in private school, and I understand as much as a non parent could, how hard it must be for parents to trust some schools, MCPS got a big fat black eye this week and I pray for the recovery of the young man. Reminds me of the horrible incident in NY years ago where a girl was raped and killed and people watched as if it were a movie. Too many did too little in wealthy montgomery County MD. Shameful. The story absolutely sickens me on so many levels I almost don’t know where to begin. God bless this ailing child and families.

Are you referring to the Kitty Genovese case? It actually didn't happen like that at all.

Well, really you do need to see that. It’s clear that Montgomery County can’t manage the kids in their school and can’t be trusted to keep the kids safe.
Maybe the schools should all be privatized if they are failing so badly. How hard is it to call an ambulance for a severely injured child before he dies? This is worse than a fraternity hazing death because there are so many so called adults there at the school. Where was the school nurse?

Were the police called?

How heartless are these students that they videotape this fight but don’t step in to aid the injured boy??

When my DC was in ES, DC was running full speed, and fell and hit DC's head on the concrete. There was a little pool of blood, and DC saw stars. They called me, but not an ambulance. It took me 40min to get him to the ER -- drive to school, then drive to ER. I was not happy. I don't understand MCPS policy on calling 911. Hitting your hard so hard you see stars and there is blood should be cause to call an ambulance. At least they could've given me that option since at the time when they called me, I didn't know how severe the injuries were. So disappointed.

At our elementary school, not only was 911 called for a child who fell and hit his head, they sent a helicopter to airlift him to Children's hospital.

You are right that training and check for consistency for head trauma procedures is needed across all schools in MCPS.

Wow, why the helicopter? Did the child lose consciousness?

No kid was “almost killed.”

Both kids look like the wanted to fight, one made a a bad call. That is why kids fight, the parents are being pussies

I hope the kid is ok, but why is the parent absolving their kid of the choice he made to fight? He didn’t have a gun to his head. His kid is in charge of his own actions—the principal should not be held responsible for kids who choose to fight on school grounds.

First of all, there has been no statement as to WHY the fight happened. Was it consensual or did one boy start and another boy defend himself? Was there bullying that occurred before the incident? I would hope MCPS would investigate deeper to resolve the issues and prevent future acts of violence at Magruder.

Second, school administrators knew that these boys were in a fight. They had physical injuries that could be seen. There were witnesses, security footage, and cell phone footage to document how violent the fight was. Medical attention for both boys was warranted. Calling EMS at least lets someone with real medical training advise as to if an ER trip is warranted. It's better to err on the side of caution. One child has a fracture skull and a blood clot in his brain.

Finally, calling 911 would not have only provided medical attention for the boys, it would have alerted the police of the incident on a day the resource officer was not in the school. This incidence deserves a police investigation. Delaying bringing in the police interferes with their ability to investigate.

This, people, this. MoCo has proven time and time again they are incompetent to provide a safe harbor for our children. Search MCPS lawsuits on your "google machine" as Joe Scarborough calls it when he is belittling people. There is not one doubt in my mind the county needs an independent body to take the hit for the union or needs to be divided into smaller districts as the problems metastasize and costs spiral out of control.

A kid at my son’s school broke his wrist on the playground and they called the paramedics and sent out a notice in case kids reported seeing the paramedics.

Who exactly would need to authorize an investigation?

This was probably DC where they still have school nurses?

It was largely parents not central people who protected her job, a lot of them really advocated and went to bat for her.

I’m not seeing that.

That is correct. The kid came down on top and hit skull in front. It was not the kid who was picked up and slammed down that fractured skull. It was the one doing the body slamming. But not saying he started fight or wasn’t attacked first, have no idea about those circumstances. Both kids went to health room after fight.

Fights seemed like they happened every week where I went to high school. It was usually really dramatic and I don't recall anyone getting seriously injured. Most fights were mutual combat, so it wasn't like many people were victims of assault. Too bad this kid was injured, but don't see how this is really newsworthy.

This may have been my son. Either that or the same thing happened to him.

I don't know anyone in the Churchill community who thought Benz was a good principal. MCPS central office cowards just spin that excuse to cover up letting her stay in place for years after horrendous things happened on her watch. To do otherwise, they would have to admit to their own culpability.
