1. Stokes Spanish
2. Stokes French
3. Inspired Teaching
4. Lee Montessori
5. Mundo Verde Brookland
6. Yu Ying
7. Shining Stars
8. Burroughs (IB, early action)

Obviously 1-6 are total moon shots, but nothing lost by listing them, I guess! We're conflicted about whether to rank Shining Stars--looks like it's been a contentious year with the board and the parents, and good friends whose daughter goes there have not been impressed and are considering switching her to their IB school.

Your list looks good. I would also be hesitant about SSMA, but honestly also hesitant about Burroughs. I'd suggest if you're interested in Spanish, why not DCB - but it's another moonshot.

Posing as swami: You'll get into Shining Stars, and be disappointed. You'll move on in PK4 to something higher on your list, so this year doesn't matter so much.

Thanks! I've heard great things about DCB but it's sadly in the exact wrong direction for both of our work commutes. Maybe I'll tour and see if the awesomeness of the school defeats my anti-commuting prejudices!

Toured Burroughs this morning and I was favorably impressed (especially compared to SSMA). Think we may drop SSMA.

If I can Fake Swami for myself: "You will get into Burroughs and almost, but not quite, get off the wait list at Mundo Verde. Your PK4 lottery number will be dismal, but in K you'll be offered a late spot at one of the others and you'll agonize over it before accepting."

FYI not sure where you’re commuting from but we pass DCI on way to Yu Ying and it takes about 3 minutes.

I hadn't thought of it that way! Yu Ying is the furthest-away school on the list and I'd sort of been thinking, "OK, nothing further away than that," but you're totally right that in terms of driving time DCB isn't *that* much further. Plus, we're more excited about Spanish than Mandarin. We might change the end of the list to 6. DCB, 7. Yu Ying, and 8. Burroughs.

My fake Swami prediction remains the same

Yeah with it being less than 8 blocks on one “back” street. The commute is a straight shot from YY. Literally like 3 stop signs.

1. Mundo Verde P St
2. Mundo Verde Brookland
3. DC Bilingual
4. Stokes Brookland - Spanish
5. Cleveland - Spanish - English Dominant (OOB)
6. Shining Stars (would only accept Spanish track)
7. Bethune 16th St
8. Bethune Brookland
9. Stokes East End - Spanish
10. Langley (IB)

Replace Langley with Burroughs. Langley has a 1 Star rating.

It’s PK3, look at the early childhood ratings. Langley is fine. OP does have two extra spots. Sounds like they are doing Spanish or bust and will tray again next year.

Where can I find early childhood ratings?

Are there others you would put on your list if you had more spots? If your number is good enough to get into Stokes, it will almost certainly be good enough to get into Inspired Teaching or Yu Ying—you might consider bumping off one of the high-demand schools in spots 6-10 and adding one that would be easier to get into, especially if you’re not thrilled about Wheatley. But if you think you’d be happy at Wheatley it makes sense to only rank schools you’re really excited about above it.

Help with our prek3 lottery list?!

Bancroft is our in-boundary, and we assume we have next to no chance of getting in there. We're weighing school quality against commute (we're in Mt. Pleasant). In particular, does anyone have insights or pros/cons on AppleTree - CoHi?

1. Mundo Verde Bilingual PCS - P Street NW
2. Mundo Verde Bilingual PCS - 8th Street NE
3. Bancroft Elementary School
4. Washington Yu Ying PCS
5. Lee Montessori PCS - Brookland
6. AppleTree PCS – Columbia Heights
7. Breakthrough Montessori PCS - Petworth
8. Inspired Teaching Demonstration PCS
9. Two Rivers PCS at 4th Street
10. E.L. Haynes PCS – Elementary School
11. Meridian Public Charter School – Elementary School
12. Shining Stars Montessori Academy PCS

Thank you!

Is Bancroft where you want to be for K? If so, I'd put it first, so your kid wouldn't have to switch (also, personally, I'd just put it above the MVs). And if your kid will be at Bancroft in Spanish immersion, I'd drop YY, because why do Mandarin only to switch to Spanish? Good luck!

Inspired, Haynes, and Two Rivers seems to be wasted slots of you prefer Appletree above them. If your master is good enough to get in any of those, you will get into Appletree.

My turn please for PK3! Not interested in immersion or Montessori

1. Shepherd
2. El Haynes
3. Barnard
4. Capital City PCS
5. Whittier (IB)
6. Powell
7. Center city brightwood
8. Sela
9. Height
10. Truesdell

Would be happy at my IB which is rated high so the schools below are for my (potential) safety. Commute and a warm program is my main focus.

I’d put Barnard at the bottom of that list.

Isn't Sela immersion?

If Bridges would work for you location-wise, have you considered Cap City?

TR4th and CHML probably wouldn't work for your commute.

Powell is Spanish Bilingual and is not a safety. It hasn’t taken any OOB English-dominant students for a few years.

Sela is Hebrew inmersion.
