"luxury" cars - why?

I just hope that I'm not subsidizing these Mercedes owners when they apply for financial aid at the colleges where we are paying full price...

I drive a luxury car. My office pays for most of it because it’s primarily used for work. The difference in cost to me is truly negligible. Don’t smugly assume everyone driving a nice car is a profligate moron.

How/why would you think you’d be “subsidizing” anyone’s tuition?

This is a stupid thread. Same reason people prefer custom luxury houses over basic boring builder tract homes, and shopping at Nordstrom's vs Macy's.... its life

You are -- plenty driving mercedes on FA, both private elementary/high and college.

You are played by the system.

What a stupid thread. People are entitled to drive whatever they want.

Small...trouser snakes. End scene.

Why not if you like cars and afford it?

Because they want to and they can.

If you look at cars now, they have come a long way from cars with back-up cameras. DH just bought a $65k car because he has a ridiculous daily commute and it has features like auto drive in traffic (it slows down and speeds up, brakes for you if someone brakes fast), and sensors all around so you always know if there’s someone in your blind spot, or if a kid runs out into the street when you’re backing up, thinks like that. ..

Except you don't have to spend $65k for all that. I have a 2018 Hyundai with all those features. Spent $25k and have the auto drive in traffic (they call it adjustable cruise control), auto breaking, cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitor (it adjusts for speed, too....the warning light comes on sooner if the approaching car is going faster), lane drift alert, heated steering wheel, air-conditioned leather seats, vertically adjustable lumbar support (helpful for us shorties!), back-up "beeps" if within 12 inches of an object, all sorts of things.

This was my first "mainstream" car. Up until now, I bought luxury models because that was the only way to get the latest features. When I went shopping this year, I discovered that with the top trim of mainstream models, you get the same stuff. What you give up is some nicer accoutrements, and possibly status, and that wasn't worth doubling my costs. In my opinion.

Have you ever experienced a luxury car? You haven't.
It looks like you like Hyundai. I'm suggesting you try the Genesis (Hyundai's luxury brand). When you go back to driving your $25k car, you'll understand why people buy luxury cars.

You can sometimes get a 2-3 year old used luxury car for the same price as new. I don't get all the hype. I looked at some the past few days and not all even had that nice interiors or drove better. Its a personal choice but sometimes the cost difference in not much or the same.

Bought an Tesla Model S was spending about 2k/month on gas plus $500/month car payment. Now I am paying $1200/month car payment and almost zero on gas/electricity. Only pay for electricity when to far from Tesla SuperCharger.

How in the world do you spend $2k/month on gas? Did your old car get 5 MPG or something?

The only time I have problem with it is when you cannot afford it.
