I interned at a law firm that specialized in medical malpractice a year ago and had also heard this nickname and felt guilt about posting it! |

Op with an update here.
Got an appt with Capital Women's Care in Rockville per the recommendation of my MFM. I looked up the doctors and they all had good reviews, only thing is they deliver at Shady Grove. Foxhall also squeezed me in for an appt, and the doctor that I have an appointment with is pretty highly reviewed. I think I prefer her, but she only delivers at Sibley. I still have the option of going to Georgetown - their Ob department can take me but they are taking a long time to get back to me since they are still reviewing my records, probably because different doctors are on rotation. Is it too excessive to go to all 3 places and figure out which one I like better? Or should I just pick one now given that I am already 35 weeks? If you've delivered with any of these places, please feel free to chime in. Thanks everyone for following along! |
I'd focus on Georgetown since they have the better NICU. |

OP where do you live? That should answer this question for you. You have a potentially complicated birth.
Even if you are scheduled for an early delivery there is nothing to prevent you from going into early labor. If I had a possibly dangerous birth I would want to chose the hospital closest to my work or home depending on where I was most often. You are NOT the person that wants to get stuck in rush hour traffic for an hour. Go to google maps and compare distance and pick the one closest to you. Although since the GT NICU and MFM staff saved the life of me and my baby (while generally being slow to respond to phone calls and making me wait for appointments) I vote for them if they fit the distance bill. |
Good point. Although in an ideal world all medical professionals would be super easy to reach and communicate with, the fact is that in serious specialties, you often don't get attention until you really NEED it. Just because GT is being a little more bureaucratic or slow does not mean you should not chose them. After all, I imagine you chose your sole practiioner OB because you liked the convenience of his practice? Convenience is not always everything in the end ... |
+1. I am PP. Everything at GT moved slowly. Except two times. The time my BP was initially high when I came in not feeling well and I was immediately hospitalized and the time I was being induced, started to develop HELLP syndrome and the baby had a big decel after one contraction and I was immediately rolled into the OR. It isn't concierge medicine. It is a big bureaucracy. But I felt like they were going to move heaven and earth to save my baby and me when it mattered. Also FWIW they were very very supportive of natural birth. They were letting me try even beyond when I wanted to try. They pulled the trigger on the c section when baby was in distress so they didn't rush into that decision at all. |
Op here. I live in Bethesda, so all 3 places are within 30 min with Sibley's being the closest. With GT I'm worried about not having a specific Ob I can go to and getting stuck with someone unknown for my delivery. When you delivered there, was it pre scheduled with someone you knew already? Also, I mentioned that I used to work there, right? I am comfortable with going there because of I know the place well, just didn't have any experience with its maternity ward. |
I've heard this too about their ER dept, both children's and regular. However, i have always heard good things about their NICU, which is what OP needs to worry about. |
There are multiple CWC practices in Rockville...the one I went to has privileges at both Shady Grove and Holy Cross Silver Spring, although I guess being in Bethesda either Shady Grove or one of the DC hospitals is more convenient for you. Although I didn't have GD, my baby was born a few weeks early and had lung/breathing issues, which you mentioned you were concerned about. He was in the NICU at Holy Cross and although not an ideal situation, I was very happy with the care there. Would also highly recommend my CWC Rockville practice. |
| I loved Shady Grove Hospital. My OB practice had 6 doctors and for both my deliveries it was someone who I had not seen frequently during the pregnancy. Everything went swimmingly. I think a lot depends also on the nurses and the staff you get. |
Capital women’s care doctors are good, though I’m not sure @ OB versus just GYN. I know that they advertise for patients. I still wouldn’t deliver at Shady Grove. |
Well, yes, the NICU is good but she also needs to worry about herself as well. |
Georgetown is for sure a rotating cast of characters. I would think that most places are as very few doctors make themselves available 24/7 for the delivery of your baby. Unless you are Beyoncé ? |
I am the PP and also the PP who had pre-eclampsia that turned into HELLP while I was on the pitocin and after one contraction was rushed into the OR. I did not know my doctors because I had been with the MFMs. My MFM didn't deliver babies so she didn't do my c section but she was there with me the WHOLE time (Drassinower, really great). My experience with them both times (I did the first half of my second pregnancy there before moving out of state) is that you know ALL the MFMs pretty quickly and one of them really becomes your doctor, but the OBs it could be anyone. That said my primary OB was Dr. Benson and I saw him all the time, he admitted me the day I my BP was high and did almost all my regular OB appointments. Dr Kelly did my c section I believe. She was great but I barely remember her honestly. I was on the mag and out of it. This is really true at every hospital though. It is who is on call. |
Omg. Just go with your MFM recommendation. You're not 1 hour from Shady Grove. All of these providers will be inducing you early or talking about a csection. Is this your first child? It's total overkill and unnecessary to see 3 different practitioners at this point in your pregnancy. Pick one and hope for the best. What is your biggest concern? |
