Ob no longer delivering me due to having GD and insulin dependent, 35 weeks - what to do?

Why don’t you give Brendan Burke a call. He has privileges at Georgetown. He delivers most of his patients but not sure who covers for him. Good luck!

Dr Burke is amazing - agree worth a call. He covers weekday deliveries and rotates with Foxhall on weekends. He generally likes to avoid induction, and I certainly can’t imagine him pushing for an induction before the MFM says it is necessary.

I’m not a doctor, but the GD didn’t really effect me. However, they tried to give the baby formula almost immediately because of low blood sugar. She was borderline low so I asked/insisted they let me try and nurse her more to see if that would work.

Did it "work" PP? I. Ant believe you'd put your baby at risk against medical advice.

Yes it worked! I wouldn’t do anything to put my baby in danger. I’m also not telling the OP to refuse medical advice. I would, however, encourage her to advocate for herself and her Baby and ask questions.

FTM so I really don't know how this works - I thought I needed to line up an Ob to deliver me? Or should I just go to Sibley and have anyone deliver me there? I'm a little confused about this too.

You're considered high risk. You should be transferred to an MFM to monitor and deliver your baby. That is actually what should have happened through your OB once they can no longer handle your case. Talk to your MFM about it.

I don't know any MFMs that deliver babies.

How are you doing OP? Any luck getting in somewhere?

OP here. Ob officially dropped me and is sending me to find a doctor through my MFM who's recommending a doctor that delivers at Shady Grove. I really don't want to go there....was there a particular doctor you liked at Foxhall? Thanks!

Not PP. But I delivered with Foxhall at Sibley after being co-treated by Sibley's MFM team due to by GD (insulin treated). I was induced a week early due to concern of DD's size (she was born just under 8lbs, a week before my due date). Dr. Davis-Wilensky delivered her via C-section (concern over an issue with monitoring her heart rate, I think she (DD) kept messing with their signal things). Foxhall has a rotational ob program, so whoever is the dr on call when you go in will be who delivers you, not necessarily your primary OB. That being said, during my pregnancy, I met all their doctors and found them all wonderful and competent.

Hi OP. I was thinking about you. How are you doing?

Have you considered contacting the antenatal center at Inova Fairfax? They deliver tons of GD babies and I would ask for a c-sec if your baby huge. Why put your self and your LO at risk?

OP here. Sorry for not updating soon enough.

I ended up having the baby at 35 weeks and 1 day when my water broke. the day that I posted on here I was super stressed, made no less than 40 calls to Ob offices all over DMV trying to get a new one to take me. Sometime that afternoon my mucus plug came out, along with some liquid, I didn't think too much of it but randomly decided to move up my 35 week growth scan at my MFM's to the next day. I casually mentioned to my MFM that my mucus plug had come out and that I was leaking a clear liquid, so my MFM asked me to go to Shady Grove's L&D to make sure it wasn't my water leaking. We both didn't think much of it. When the SG L&D nurse tested me and told me it was indeed my water, I had a massive breakdown and was scared out of mind since I had not met with any new Obs yet. I didn't want to have my baby at all, I begged everyone around me to let me keep him in, but was told that he had to come out. I was not ready and it was an extremely traumatic experience for me.

Aside from the initial trauma with delivery, amazingly baby came out super healthy - a 9 Apgar and had no problem with breathing or blood sugar. No NICU stay at all and we went home after two days. He's now one month and I'm struggling with PPD/an overwhelming amount of guilt for having him so early, but getting better every day.

For those who asked, the Ob who dropped me is Robert Footer. My amazing MFM was Dr Sheri Hamersly - I seriously can't recommend her enough, I feel like she saved my baby.

Wow OP that sounds really stressful and traumatic. Glad the baby is ok and glad you are getting better and better.

FYI, Jeff is now deleting negative reviews of women's health care practitioners, so this whole thread may need to be deleted.

Wow, that sounds traumatic!! I’m so glad you have a healthy baby.

Please know you did everything you could to carry your baby as long as you could! No guilt or shame!

And please see someone for PPD. this is not the time to power through. Get the help you need sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the update, and I hope he continues to thrive!

Thank you! Do you have recommendations for a PPD specialist? I've not had time to look one up. - OP
