For Blair it was 44 math and 92 verbal, 5 on the written.

Woops meant to write 52 verbal not 92

Looks like Bliar calculate Math differently.Probably # of correct answers vs. percentile of kids who solved that many problems. Any idea 52 out of how many questions? Should it be 60?

My DD who is a Freshman this year had 60 verbal questions and 50 math on her test.

Hoping they come in mail this afternoon. The waiting is driving DD crazy!

Me again! DD got envelopes from CAP and RM yesterday (and based on the info I got here from you all, I was pretty sure they would good nes since both large manila envelopes) Accepted to both, and she is thrilled.

She didn't get anything from Blair Science yet.

DD starting to make the decision now I saw in a previous post the high number of kids who applied to RM IB. DD had heard about this too at the info night they held. Anyone know why it gets so many more applicants than the Science and CAP programs? Is it just because there are a couple of Science Magnets in the county and a Humanities program in poolsville that draws the kids from that side of the county from CAP?

RMIB takes applicants from whole county so naturally, more students can apply. In addiiton, RMIB students attent all classes, except PE and music, with their peers, which means you get the best teachers and peers for your English and Social studies, as well as your science and math classes. In Blair SMAC, the students take English, Social studies, and foreign language classes with the local students. The student body in any given class is heterogeneous, and some of the teachers hardly teach anything in class.

I've been telling her how popular the program is doesn't necessarily mean that it is a better program FOR HER.

RMIB is the only magnet that is accessible to the whole county. SMAC is divided between Poolesville (9 clusters) and Blair (16 clusters). CAP is only the DCC.

Global Ecology at PHS is accessible to the whole county as well. It has to take 20-30 from Poole MS out of 70 something spots. So, the 1st round is very competitive.

My understanding that there are buses from around county to RM, but there are almost none to Poolesville outside of home cluster. So technically Global is not accessible beyond Rockville. Who will drive kid from Takoma Park to Duffief ES every morning? You have to be insane.

It was same this year.

"More than 1000 for RMIB for 125 accepted.

More than 650 at Blair STEM for 100 spots."

I guess it could be different this year but for Blair at least there will almost certainly be more than 100 spots. They have 4 classes and they pretty much put 28 or 29 in a class.

Anyone know what the median percentile scores and essay ratings were for CAP?
I don't know if CAP really helps kids get into college the way the others do but seems like a good program for kids who like to write.

Anonymous wrote:My DD waitlisted for Poolesville SMCS and Global, any suggestions to help increase the chances of acceptance???

Several years ago we did appeal in this situation (it was denied), but also my child wrote additional Essay explaining why PHS program would be great fit, and got extra recommendations from teachers who originally did not provide recommendations.
Since additional data that was added during appeal end up in file, I believe it helped in second round. So child was invited to both. Good luck. There would be many seats open. Very often Poolesville invites same kids to multiple programs.

Thank you so much...but did you put an appeal or sent the additional information along with the wait pool form?? and Did you call the magnet coordinator???
Surprisingly my DD's Math teacher asked her if she needs his special recommendation once he knew she was in Wait pool...felt so special.

Anyone who is in the waitpool should not sit on the sidelines. Speak up, give supplemental evidence, talk to the coordinator. Here the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

BTDT.

We put an appeal, but I do not think that matters. Appeal was denied anyway. You can just add info to file. You do not need to speak with magnet coordinator, that would not help but only irritate person. Can you imagine if all parents of waitlisted kids will start to call?

No, it was 50 in math. The other numbers are correct.

I am looking at the reject letter from Blair as I write this: 50 math, 60 verbal, 6 writing.

You can call the magnet coordinator for your child's score and ask questions about your concerns. We called her and left a message (she got back to us quickly). Good luck!

Has anyone ever appealed a rejection (not waitlist) and gotten in? I don't know if I should even bother. Will the magnet coordinator be able to give me any information on the reason for the rejection? Good grades, scores exactly at median for accepted students.

If scores are exactly median of accepted students you have ground for appeal. Do it. Add all recommendations you can find from new set of teachers (Math, Science from 7th grade etc.) Any activities related too.
Most likely there were many kids from your home HS with scores higher than your child's. They are trying to get approximately even representation from whole part of the county.
You have nothing to loose. You child probably will be added to waitpool, but will not be chosen.

I know someone who did for ms magnet. Can't hurt to try, and it sounds like you've got a good case.
