When do they notify about HS magnet school acceptances?

Does anyone have experience contacting the magnet coordinator to get information on the reason for the rejection? DD got 89% on math, 99% on language, 6 on writing and still isn't selected by RMIB

Wow, my kid got into RMIB last year, and I would be wondering with those scores as well. If you had said that both scores were around the median, i don't think that means much, but here, one score was significantly above the median (99%) and the other score (math), I assume was just a little below the median. I thought they usually gave greater weight to one score significantly above median. Good luck.

The median for selected is 90% for both. So we are curious about the reason of the rejection. We are not planning to appeal as we have other choices (Blair Stem and CAP) but my kid is a little upset as most of the friends got selected by RMIB. Maybe I should just pick up the phone and call...

I spoke to the RM coordinator yesterday and was told the median scores were Math 90 and Verbal 89. Close but just wanted to give the correct number.

Wow, that's tough. My child also scored much higher on verbal than the median, and only a little below on math, and also got rejected.

At any rate, it's partially a crapshoot, with only 1 in 10 being accepted. Did your DD at least make waitlist? Definitely start appearling she is unhappy.

I’m even more shocked now knowing your kid got into SMAC, so was obviously great in both verbal and math. And she didn’t even get on the waitlist with that. I dont usually believe in appeals, but I would definitely want to make sure this wasn’t a mistake. Was it lack of ECs perhaps? I’m still floored. We love Blair by the way.

I called the RM Magnet office today and was told the same thing about selection factors listed on the rejection letter (whole application package blah blah) but no particular reason of the rejection. Now I have no idea what additional information I can put in if we decide to appeal. Her GPA is 4.0. Initially we thought perhaps she didn’t get good recommendations, but apparently they are good enough to get her into Blair...

By the way, the letter said the median for language is 90 percentile but when I called the office, I was told 89 percentile.

I’m grateful for your post, as I had really not heard of people with scores and grades like your daughter getting rejected. It will help me plan better fior some younger kids. I’m glad to hear your kid has other great options though, whatever happens with RMIB.

One question on the test is a student preference ranking of schools. That could be a game changer...

Maybe not. She put RM as her first choice and Blair SMCS as the last. Anyway, it has been almost a week since the initial shock and I hope she can put this aside and move on now. Just one less option to consider. I am going to send out an appeal letter and will update the result if anyone is interested.

Our son was accepted to both Blair and RMIB, but it sounds like his scores were lower.

Did you call RMIB for scores? They're not listed on our letter.

I had neighbors arguing that ALL that matters for acceptance to these programs is the test scores, but I think our experience proves that wrong.

They don’t list scores for selected/waitlisted students, only for those not selected. But you can call the office for your kid’s scores.

It does sound like they do consider more than the test scores. Recommendations, the essay, extracurriculars. There are so many high achieving students in the county with 4.0 GPAs that they can't necessarily accept everyone with high test scores.

Could be the fact that MCPS changed the selection process too.

There may be some additional factors besides those.
