Criticizing "virtue signaling" is just another form of virtue signaling. What, you want a pat on the back?

LOL THANK YOU! I hate the "virtue signaling" poster.

You're both wrong, actually. Criticizing virtue signaling does nothing to show what the criticizer actually believes.

I'm the "virtue signaling" poster. Why do you hate me?

Because you keep on posting that as a response to ANYONE who does anything that doesn't agree with your politics.

It shows they think they are better than those who "virtue signal"

Yeah, you know what I've seen on DCUM criticized as "virtue signaling"?

- The committed activist kid admitted to a bunch of Ivys.
- Protests of any kind
- Any kind of public expression of anything you believe in that happens to be on the left

Next thing you know, h/she will tell us that voting (for the party he does not like) is "virtue signaling."

OP, I think the thread shows that the people most likely to be offended by the sign are white people who din't agree with it.

To me, that's reason enough to do it. For one thing, your being white makes the message a little louder. Particularly for those who can't hear it.

You will never please all the people all the time, OP. Do what feels right to you w/r/t the sign. There are people who will sneer at you for putting it up, like the ppl on this thread, but there are also people who will appreciate knowing that you care about racism in this country.

Well, TBF, they probably are.

Yes, as everyone knows, the white people are the true heroes here.

People are going to characterize it in whatever way fits and supports their biases.

But how effective is the BLM message if black people are the only ones who believe it?

I agree that only having a yard sign is not enough. But I don't think that OP is suggesting that having a yard sign is her only form of activism.

Having a yard sign or bumper sticker or button or whatever is a very easy, very cheap, very small thing. But, I don't think it's harmful.

Actually, OP said exactly that. She admitted that her only form of activism is her "social worker" job and she can't do much more than that. So, yeah, basically OP just wants to put a sign on her lawn (and still send her kid to LAMB). Just another hypocrite.
Hey I would rather see a sign in OP's yard and know that one more person cares about black people being shot by police. I don't give a damn if she's a hypocrite. Better a sign than nothing.

She should also care about police being shot by black people too. Or blacks that kill blacks which is more prevalent. Pick your battles but IMO the neighborhood isn't the place to get political.

All it really says is "I'm a white dumbass, and probably defenseless inside my home, if anyone wants to do a little home invasion action".

You really haven't lived in these kinds of neighborhoods, have you? You're so obviously making the wrong assumptions about the neighbors. Ignorant.

Yeah, do they go around thinking to themselves - I won't say or do anything that makes it look like I have a specific set of values because people might think I'm showing off? The people around them must be in awe of their ability to refrain from public commitments to anything so they can avoid looking insincere.

Yes, OP, as several pps have noted, people are going to think what they think about your sign and you can't control that. As one of the posters above who wondered herself whether to put up that sign, I figure you just have to decide if it is going to help send a message and the heck with what the other people think.
