Teachers who never visited VA historic places

Anonymous
Plus I heard complaints from some parents about elementary school field trips to places like Jamestown, Gettysburg etc. They believed such places were irrelevant. Some of the same parents complained about the ES Thanksgiving feast-again not relevant to their culture.

I wouldn't call OP weird or petty but her take is "interesting".

I know tons of teachers who travel the globe although they may or may not have been to Jamestown. Maybe historical sites are just not their thing.

Just because they don't visit the local jaunts doesn't mean they're not well-traveled.

I would think most people interested in US history would go to sites near or in VA. If citizens or those who want to be citizens are NOT interested in our history then I find it unusual. Jamestown is near Yorktown. VA is near Gettysburg, Antietam, Philadelphia.

Harpers Ferry. Bull Run/Manassas. Valley Forge. http://loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/presentationsandactivities/presentations/timeline/amrev/turning/valley.html

Gettysburg is not a local jaunt akin to a vineyard tour. Nor are any of these other places.

I take it [b]you aren't very well read, and can only learn things by going to a site and having someone tell you a few facts about that site. Unlike you, most history buffs learn the vast majority of what they know from reading extensively. While many visit historic sites, reading extensively is vital to teaching a class with enthusiasm and depth, while visiting is just a minor bonus
. Just because you lack the means to glean knowledge from our rich written history doesn't mean teachers are equally deficient. Give reading a try, it might open you mind to a whole new world.

I am extremely well read. Plus I've walked the battlefields. Real people died on those sites. Are you from the USA? Any ancestors died in those wars? These sites are not just for history buffs. Too many people here that don't care about our history except for the benefits it has for them.

So JFC perhaps you haven't heard the complaints. I did and no one came on the Mayflower but I have had ancestors in every major war including the Revolution. DH from Civil War on...

My point was that people fly on in to the USA and don't care about this country. On 9 11 friends from Central America were furious and ready to fight for the USA. Some others had different reactions.

The explorer Christopher Newport would be excited to receive more educators in Jamestown.

Ok... tell us what else you think about the 'complainers' in your community.

Now because people don't visit Jamestown they don't care about this country. Ok, now we've really gone off the deep end. Sorry, I love this country and have never been to Jamestown. All these litmus tests for who loves this country and who doesn't are really chipping away at what has made this country great. Give it a rest, please.

Turn off FoxNews and get your head out of your ass. Whether someone has visited Jamestown - or not - is not an accurate measure of a teacher's quality or commitment to their work. It's also not an accurate measure of someone's patriotism.

Just stop already.

Again, I wonder what OP's position is on teachers who've traveled the world but have never been to Jamestown? Fairfax is full of such people.

Foxnews has nothing to do with this. This is not a liberal vs conservative issue. Does everything have to be political?

FWIW, I have posted on this thread defending the teacher and I frequently watch Fox News.

OP lacks common sense. Period. So do you.

I was at Jamestown over the weekend with my kids. We thought a Williamsburg trip for a couple days would be fun and we went to Jamestown for a few hours. It's fascinating if you've never been. It only took 2 hrs/25 mins to get there, so you could easily go up and back in a day. It cost about $40 for my whole family to get in.

I'm actually with OP. I'd be surprised if a history teacher that lives in this area has not been to Jamestown. It's significant to U.S. history, not just Virginia history. I do think it shows a lack of intellectual curiosity. Plus, children learn better from teachers who are both informed and excited by the subject matter. And hands on projects and field trips make the subject matter "stick" for kids.

Dang. A lot of you seem to be lacking in intellect. Do you all spend your weekends at the food court at the mall?
Anonymous
And this is precisely why kids don't know or care about American history...even their teachers don't care enough to visit local sites of significance.

When PP regurgitates FoxNews nonsense then I guess it becomes political. Tell PP not to bring it up if it's a touchy subject for you.

Sure you were, OP.
