| Doesn't sound weird? Especially teachers who have been living in VA for quite a while. |
|
How do you know where your teachers have or haven't visited?
Why would you post this here? It seems petty. |
| Are you also concerned about Common Core worksheets? |
|
I know because the other day I had a casual conversation with two teachers about interesting places I visited with my kids. It was very surprising when both teachers commented
they've never been to Jamestown. |
It is a forum where people post questions, news, vents, etc. Why does it bother you? |
| No. Doesn't sound weird to me. Lots of people who live in Virginia haven't been to every historic site in the state. |
|
I've moved a lot and I can tell you this happens everywhere. So many locals never see half the places of historic interest or stuff that makes the travel guidebooks. I try to take advantage of what I can do and see where I'm living, but I think a lot of people don't have the time, interest or motivation. I just assume they are busy doing other things or plan to do it "one day" but I wouldn't think it was weird if a teacher had never been some place like Jamestown.

We're talking about teachers, not lots of people out there. |
Maybe they've been to other sites you've never visited, OP. There are so many historic sites in this region that not everyone can do everything. And not everyone is interested in history, even teachers. I get the impression that you assume that because they are teachers, they should have been to Jamestown or they're somehow lacking as teachers. That may not be the message you intended here, I know, but it is how it comes across. If they are fourth grade history teachers in the Northern Virginia area, yes, it seems possible that they would have had the opportunity to go there (since at least in Fairfax County there are usually many fourth grade school field trips to Jamestown because that the year kids do Virginia history) but otherwise, there may be plenty of reasons they haven't gone. |
| Why would this even be an issue? Who goes to Jamestown anyways? It doesn't seem like an interesting destination for me, or anyone in my family, so of course I wouldn't expect teachers to go there. You are weird, OP, and petty. |
I wouldn't call OP weird or petty but her take is "interesting". I know tons of teachers who travel the globe although they may or may not have been to Jamestown. Maybe historical sites are just not their thing. Just because they don't visit the local jaunts doesn't mean they're not well-traveled. |
| Do you know how many New Yorkers have never been to the Statue of Liberty? I don't know why you think a teacher has a special obligation to go to Jamestown. |
People like to pick on and find fault with teachers. It seems to be getting worse. So unfortunate. |
These are the same 4th grade teachers who are supposed to teach history. Other teachers I know have been to many historic places and share their enthusiasm with students. |
| I teach algebra. I've never been to Jamestown. It's yet to affect my teaching. |
