| The writers are using poetic license with the "cure" that Thomas is attempting. It may not have actually existed in the 1920's, but it does in Downtonland. |

I think that Thomas is on drugs. They pointed out that a spoon was missing, it was probably Thomas to do drugs.

DA goes to great lengths to,keep things in the period. It is either a testosterone product or drugs Look at the way Carson does the de-canting |
This is so true and it's exactly what that Atlantic article quoted up thread says. One more episode where the teacher comes to dinner, Edith mopes around, and the old ladies banter with each other. Can someone remind me who, if anyone, knows about Edith's baby? How long was she gone for? It seems very odd that no one would suspect there's anything going on with her and that farmers kid. |
| ok re Edith's baby: the farmer, the Dowager, and Lord G's sister knows--she took Edith to some other country for a trip, but was really helping her with pregnancy and birth. |
How does the farmer know? How does Mary not suspect!? |
I figured spoon + syringe + undereye circles = heroin? |
He took the spoon. Remember the scene where Ms Hughes says no eating upstairs? What was he crying about when Baxter heard him through the door? |
I think Edith told him but I can't remember now. Mary wouldn't suspect b/c the two aren't close and Mary was going through her own stuff, e.g., depression after Matthew's death. Better question is why Cora isn't more attuned to her daughters. Not that she would guess Edith had a kid, but seems clueless that Edith is so utterly unhappy. |
The farmer put two and two together at the beginning, and admitted to Edith that he knew an episode or two ago. The Dowager and the aunt know about the baby, but I don't think they know that Edith retrieved her from that Dutch(?) adoptive family and placed her with the farmer's family instead. |
Yes, this is sort of an annoying quality with DA. The characters are so involved in their own stories--the writers aren't recognizing that as a family, they'd all be at least a little more in tune with what's going on with each other. Like Cora should be onto something about Edith, and possibly Mary. Or maybe not "onto" something but notice that something's not quite right. It's like the stories stand alone too much. And a PPs point about Rose is true, too…she's just there, sitting around. Maybe she didn't catch audience appeal last season so they downgraded her, but it's sort of weird to have her be there and not have any men swirling around her. |
Baxter also caught a glimpse of what Barrow had in his little box, and it looked like a syringe and hose. Later in the episode she told him she thinks he's sick, not his dad, and she guessed it from seeing the medical supplies in the box. It's gotta be heroin. |
It's a bogus gay "cure." http://www.out.com/entertainment/popnography/2014/10/20/downton-abbey-alert-thomas-looks-gay-cure-new-season |
I think he was crying because he's so deeply sad about his sexuality. |
