Yeah, it's not like there has been any history of planes going down by acts of terrorism.

The tickets showed a through flight connecting to Amsterdam.

not that p9 but I suppose because its especially sad when children are involved in a tragedy

Everybody on the flight was somebody's kid. Spelling out that there were children onboard just feeds the prurient nature of our interest in these stories. Adds to the horror and misery of it all.

They add infants to the count bc they wouldn't have been included in the seat count. Eg you could have a plane crash w/ a 200 seater with all seats full but have 200+ passenger fatalities if there were lap children.

I think it was either a bomb or pilot suicide. Any other problem would have included a distress call or something. Hard to imagine the plane just instantaneously falling apart for some structural reason.
Anonymous
Or a missile, like what many people believe happened to TWA 800.

Right, because planes never go down for mechanical reasons, pilot error (or deliberate), and every time someone has used a stolen or forged passport on a plane, it's 1000% terrorism. Nobody every boards a plane with a stolen passport otherwise.

All of those options are being discussed here. I don't get your point.

So we are allowed to discuss all options except for terrorism, which is off the table. Got it.

Not terrorism in general, just Islamic terrorism. Just wanted to get that straight.

Yes, just last week there was a knife attack in a train station by Uighur separatists that killed 29 people:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/knife-attack-at-chinese-train-station-leaves-28-dead-more-than-100-injured/2014/03/01/0b20ed8e-a195-11e3-9ba6-800d1192d08b_story.html

I think the fact that the plane was going to China sheds doubt on suggestions that the fake passports were being used by asylum seekers or drug smugglers. I can't imagine that anyone with an Italian or Austrian passport would seek asylum in China and I there would have to be a better way of getting drugs into China.

Jeff please keep writing on this thread! I wanted to make a thread requesting your thoughts on this. You always have insightful posts.

The tickets that used those passports were not set to terminate in China - rather to Copenhagen and Frankfurt. They were only connecting in Beijing.

Some are arguing this supports the terrorism link because they didnt need a Chinese visa.

Me either. It couldn't have possibly been terrorism? Is that the point?

One more data point: Last month, the Department of Homeland Security issued two separate warnings about airline-related terrorism:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/02/19/homeland-security-alerts-airlines-to-possible-shoe-bomb-threat/

"The Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin Wednesday warning airlines of possible attempts to attack passenger jets using explosives packed in shoes"

"Earlier this month Homeland Security warned airlines with flights to Russia to be on the lookout for explosive devices possibly hidden inside toothpaste."

I previously mentioned the knife attack by Uighurs. There was also another attack by Uighurs in October; a jeep was driven into a crowd in Tiananmen Square. So, there does seem to be somewhat of a terrorism campaign against China.
