Downton Abbey 2/16 thread *Spoilers*

I don't think you get a lady's maid until you're married (and thereafter, even if widowed). Married women also aren't expected down for breakfast; it's brought to them in bed by the lady's maid....

I think you have to be married to get one.

You also have to be married to get to have breakfast in bed. I'm thinking that might be to give her time to recover from her husband's affections the night before & to help encourage fertility.

If you get pregnant and have morning sickness, and thus start not appearing at breakfast, it encourages speculation. But if you are not expected to come downstairs for breakfast, that takes care of that! Are the husbands expected at breakfast?

I doubt that the Dowager Countess is in any danger of getting pregnant, yet she doesn't appear at breakfast either. It seems to be a custom for married ladies; Mary used to go down for breakfast until she got married. All the men go down at breakfast.

the guy Thomas hit on filed a report with the police. The police come out to investigate.

Huh? I don't remember someone going to the police about Thomas. Could you refresh my memory? Was it the little blonde guy who liked Ivy? Was it the guy barrow had an affair with the first episode in season 1?

It was Alfred. He felt he "morally" couldn't stay quiet since it was a sin (and maybe also at the goading of O'Brien?). This after he walked in on Thomas trying to get into bed with Jimmy (blonde guy) when he was asleep.

Did Lord Grantham also indicate that they already knew about Thomas? Not sure how, but it was sort of implied that everyone knows he is gay.

When Lord G found out about Thomas he indicated that it was nbd. He had seen lots of homosexual behavior when he was away at school.

Yes, only married ladies and widows get breakfast in bed -- there was a reference to this a few seasons ago in the context of Edith feeling sorry for herself after she was left at the altar. We don't see the DC at breakfast b/c she doesn't live in the abbey; I'm sure she has breakfast in bed at the dower house.

Oh, come on, you gotta love the way she called Ivy out for teasing Alfred.

I guess you'll have to find other ways to conceal your morning sickness.

I also love Daisy's accent. Any brits on here that can pinpoint it? Definitely sounds northern, practically scottish.

The actress is from Bradford in Northern England. Her parents are Irish so there might be some Irish inluence there, too.
