For the record, JMU is 57-43 Female Male...not 70-30....Was surprised at DDs rejection there with a solid 3.8 so she is headed to UMD and living at home :/

Her specific decision didn't surprise me that much because the school has 30,000+ applicants and no one is a shoe-in. However, after she and I did more research we were very surprised to learn that Wash U frequently puts huge numbers of students onto their waitlist in order to increase yield, they have a simple application with no supplement to encourage applicants and therefore appear more selective, and they review all of their thousands of applications in less than 1 month (Feb. 15-March 10). Seems sketchy to me.

Wash U is one of the best universities in the country. Period. It doesn't have to appear more selective, it is.

Washington University in St Louis is the poster child for how to manipulate US News rankings. Ferguson documents it in his book, Crazy U.

Which is an excellent book, by the way! And a much needed laugh in the midst of all the application angst.

What did the rest of her list look like, and how's it going?

My son was not accepted by UC Berkeley despite a 32 ACT score, 4.27 GPA, 32 hours of AP credit/ actual college courses logged during senior year in Math and Electives, JV soccer and wrestling, an internship with a PR firm, and community service. He was disappointed but was accepted at UVa and UT Austin. Looking back he wishes he'd applied to more stretch schools to have a better selection to choose from.

I'm just thrilled his two top choices worked out and hoping UVa makes a good need based financial offer.

UVA is a great school. Congratulations. As for UT Austin, is that now a hot state school among the DC area kids (a la Michigan, UVA)?

Sounds light on extra currics and the ACT score is low if you are out of state. UVA is a great option! DC is applying to UVA with higher scores and grades and its a stretch school OOS.
