s/o college- where was your kid denied acceptance that surprised you?

For those who haven't been through the college application process lately, it has become SUPER competitive especially at the top schools.

My #s were based on an (out of state) state scoool. Our bottom line cost is about $32,000. UVA publishes cost of attendance to be $24,000 per yr for VA residents.

That's including room and board.
but surely you do not have to live on campus? Is that not the most expensive option?

Most universities have to really strive to find enough boys on par with girls nowadays, but MIT is one where it still has more guys applying. So, it's going to be really hard for a normal white boy to be accepted...and if he's Asian...forget it! AA boys would have a very great chance.

But that's to make up for their past gender discrimination, right?

No, it is to try to keep the campus filled with a decent number of females.

All schools try for an even balance of males and females(if at all possible).

College is MUCH harder to get into these days. DD is a NMSF, valedictorian, 7 APs before senior year (and got all 5s), legacy, and major extracurriculars (nothing national, however). Deferred from Ivy where she is a legacy.

Unless you live at home usually living on campus is less expensive than an apartment. To start with apartments have 12 month leases so unless you can sublet you are paying while its vacant. Depends on the location of the school of course and how expensive the housing is.

How about Asian girls? is there a chance?

But you are on to something. As another poster mentioned most schools seek gender parity. And in order to get boys, at most schools, GPA's and test scores are a bit lower so they have it easier than girls. At engineering schools girls have an advantage because, again, the school is seeking gender parity and not as many girls apply. So the bar is set a little lower

Most disadvantaged at this point are Asian kids - too many Asian kids with stellar test scores, GPAs and rigorous programs and not enough spaces for the spots allocated for this group for the school to be able to say that they have a balance of gender, race, etc.

I think it is time to end all of this nonsense and let the best applicant have the spot without regard to gender, race, etc.

You know that that would disadvantage white boys, right? That's why it won't happen. Affirmative Action lives, just not it the way that most people think.

I do not want my DD to go to a school that is too heavily female because then the men on campus act too entitled. So I am all in favor of taking gender into account.

But it would really help white girls and Asians.

I don't care who it "helps". I think think the most qualified applicant should get the spot.

11:59 again - didn't complete my thought process. Now that both of these are helping run schools, and donating as alumnae, maybe there's a better chance?
