i was born and raised in southern maryland and have lived in the district for the past 12 years. my issue with virginia is that i am absolutely terrified of driving there for all of the exact same reasons someone posted about earlier. i get lost every single time and end up circling the pentagon, or on some parkway desperately trying to get back to the city.
my sister teases me because i can drive and navigate my way thru baltimore and dc better than anywhere in northern va. we bought some ikea furniture from a family in chantilly and dh kept joking that we were in south florida. |

Re Schools: Hmm. In addition to our (VA) outstanding public schools, I wonder why no one has mentioned the VA university system, which now excels the old Cal State and UC Cal system. We're really hoping to take advantage of that jewel next year.
Re: All drivers in all three "states" are awful. Driving defensively takes on a new meaning altogether in MD, DC and VA. I'm terrified to let my teen on any of these roads. Re Beauty: Go out route 29 someday and drive towards Charlottesville. It's absolutely stunning. Go to the Blue Ridge Mtns. Absolutely gorgeous unspoiled beauty. Re Wealth: earlier PP is correct. Tysons is going to become the new big destination city. It's already happening with the hi-tech corridor. The construction is finally over. The infrastructure is in place with Dulles and the new Metro. Our property values are finally moving up again. I'm not saying I like it - I avoid shopping at Tysons like the plague but I can get to the movie theaters there now in less than five min. due to the HOT lanes. Re charm: Lots of wonderful VA charm: Alexandria, some parts of Arlington, Charlottesville and lots of charming little old towns. And gorgeous ski slopes. Wintergreen. Re space: I don't understand those who claim they get lost over here. Get a map or a GPS system. Or move to NYC where you can live on a grid. I find the rural charm here delightful. Wish I had enough property for a horse. I like being able to drive and park. I can't do that in CC and will turn down party invites if I know I won't be able to find parking over there. Re snobbery: MD wins hands down as evidenced by the OP who started this all. Just please all go to your all-white, all-men country clubs and stay there. Re racists: We aren't. Get over it. Re the south: MD is also in the "the south. Re conservatism: Personally I think that is a plus, but the state is a mish-mash of politics - everyone knows that. Freedom: VA has the spirit. MD is dead. |
Looks like you have gotten a lot of comments. I have not read them but I will tell you my thoughts. I grew up in VA and I think it is too conservative and the traffic is horrific. I would actually prefer to live in MD where it is more liberal but my DH insists on staying in VA to be near my MIL. Sigh. |
Yeah, okay. I'm sure the balance of economic activity will suddenly flee the District and the 8 bajillion people who flock to it every day for work. But whatever you need to believe, pal. |

It's an overwhelming fact that on any given lunch hour from now through the end of the year that many people will travel to VIRGINIA on their lunch hour to the Pentagon City mall or other locales to get their shopping done.
Hell, even on the Hill, when have you ever heard ANYONE say, I'm just running to Oxen Hill or Rockville to pick something up instead of during rush hour. It NEVER happens! We love your shopping dollars!!! |
You do realize that this is the City Paper and that the article takes a highly sarcastic tone, right? |
I wouldn't be caught dead traveling to the Pentagon City Mall and neither would any of my colleagues when we can A) shop online and when B) we have many, many stores to choose from in downtown DC including Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor LOFT, Zara, H&M, Nine West, Victoria's Secret, Anthropologie, Brook's Brothers, Burberry, PINK, and Macy's (just to name a few). But keep on dreaming. |
You are aware that Northrup Grumman moved their entire corporate headquarters from Los Angeles and relocated it to Fairfax Country, VA last year, correct? I believe MD did compete for that businesses....looking over the past nine pages, I think we can all see why they chose wisely. Never say never my friend. Don't think the Living Socials of DC aren't thinking about it..... |
You know you're losing the argument when you start attacking sources. Unless it's the Onion of course... |
Haha, this is SO true. I was really shocked to that there were so many rednecks there. |
Nope. Bottom line is that Tyson's will never be Washington, DC. |
If I valued shopping, then that would influence my thinking. But, I don't value shopping, nor do I value getting people's shopping dollars. I value human rights, including e.g. dignity and equality for gays and lesbians and immigrants. |
right it will be much better, no welfare population to have to support by high taxes, better business environement |
And we'll just going on being the seat of power for the country. |

DC resident who grew up in NoVa here.
On driving, Maryland and Virginia drivers are bred to hate eachother. Just one example: Maryland drivers expect you to move over if you're both driving in the left lane and they are overtaking you. Virginia drivers expect you to go around if you're in such a hurry. Neither approach is better than the other, but they clash, so a Virginia driver in the left lane driving 70 thinks the Maryland guy behind him going 80 is an idiot for flashing his lights like a maniac when the middle lane is wide open. And when the positions are reversed, the Virginia guy wonders why the hell the Maryland guy is slowly moving over to block the Virginia guy from passing on the right. Maryland drivers think VA has bad signage, while Virginia drivers hate 270 because WTH is with all these exits inside of exits and having to get on to some access road 4 miles before your exit or else you miss it? |
