Preschool wants DD to wear shorts under her skirts/dresses. Normal?

This thread is 19 months old. I don't think finding shorts for under dresses was the issue. Most kids stores sell them.

OP here. I was shocked to see this old post at the top of the page today! As an update: we started buying monkey bar buddies shorts to wear under dresses and I realized (first time mom) that it is much more comfortable and appropriate for DD to wear shorts under dresses. I was just turned off by the way the preschool framed it as a sexual issue. I was even more turned off when the preschool had a "parade day" and they did my DD's hair with hairspray and put bright blush and hot pink lipstick on her (a 3 yo) and instructed the kids to sashay around the playground in the parade. We moved her to a montessori shortly thereafter and she's been happy (with underwear covered) ever since.

Well, yes. We moved to Texas. I think the hairspray thing and kiddie make-up may also be cultural, as I see that look on a lot of little girls here in the Mexican national community.

I used to do that to my pre-schooler all the time (except she hated it). She like to flip around a lot -- and yes -- i didn't necessarily want her hanging off the monkey bars with her drawers showing to the world. What's the big deal about the shorts?

I think it's crazy. A three year old being potty trained is different from a 6+ year old. I would prob do it for school but would not be happy about it. It seems like they are sexualizing preschoolers. Very weird.

I don't think this is odd at all. After my DD outgrew dresses with bloomers we switched to bike shorts. Call it what you like. I find it gross myself to see 3,4,5,6 yr old girls sitting in dresses legs spread with their underwear showing.

Most of my DD's skirts come w attached shorts. Not a big deal. Teacher is probably embarassed to see girls pull up their skirts when dads are picking up their kids.

Don't you watch the news? Always be cautious about child predators. They can be anywhere.

This is normal and required at our kid's DCPS preschool. It's not that they pull up their skirts (they do) or play on the bars (they do) it's all the sitting criss-cross applesauce with panties showing all the time.

We always do shorts or leggings under skirts. French toast sells "uniform" colored bike shorts.

I remember wearing boxer shorts under my uniform in HS.

My DDs were at a nice preschool, private elementary and middle school and all three schools requested this of all the girls. They suggested bike shorts or those cotton/elastic waist fit gym shorts.

+1 DD always has either bloomers or bike shorts under dresses. In cold weather it will be leggings or tights. She's two and a half.

And one if my pet peeves is parents who put their little girls in dresses and then keep telling them to sit properly, don't doa somersault, etc. All while their sons are running free. IMO, this bothers me more than putting bike shorts on my girl.

Skorts, compression shorts, bike shorts. Girls should be able to do everything a boy does at this age -- without showing her panties or anything else. It is a normal request and a requirement in private schools where the girls wear skirts.
