Here you go: The only guaranteed way to lose weight is...

You're extremely immature. You are turning this into a clinical depression argument. And I'm not buying it. But you gave it a good try, though. Just realize most folks don't buy that lame and tired argument. If you were clinically depressed, gained weight and are now better, that's great for you. But your personal experience does not speak for every obese/overweight person. The proactive approach is going very well, thank you. I gained weight after tubal ligation surgery and generally not being concerned with the weight gain, because I carry it well. But, *I* know I'm not happy/healthy at my current weight, so I've started to do something about it. |
Wow...please calm down with the hysterics. I'm simply quoting the pp who said "When you're depressed (really depressed) you can't even get out of bed sometimes. It takes so much energy to do anything!" Take your argument up with her. |
I think it's fair to say that some obese people are clinically depressed. I think it's fair to say that some skinny people are clinically depressed. I think it's fair to say that some obese people are just lazy and not taking care of themselves. I think it's fair to say that some skinny people are just lazy and not taking care of themselves.
I think it's more than fair to say that none of us knows what's going on inside people, so trying to diagnose en masse or deny any diagnosis en masse does a disservice to many, many people. The generalizations here are shocking. |
I'm 40 pounds overweight. I'm also a triathlete. This week, I biked 20 miles twice, swam 1600 twice, and ran 5 miles twice. (I have a spring tri in August.) I ran a half-marathon in April. I also go to karate class twice a week. I'm fit AND fat. My doctor is very happy with all of my blood work. I am not eating 1300 calories a day just to change the way I look. Fuck that. |
I actually eat 1600-1700. I gave you my net caloric intake. If you are as fit as you say and you are 40 pounds overweight, you must eat a truckload of calories each day. But, hey do what works for you. I do look forward to meeting my goal weight and going back to 2000 net calories! |
I'm the poster on page 1 who's 230 at 5'5". I don't need anyone to tell me I'm fat. I know. I don't know why anyone would think ANY fat person, unless they're in a medically induced coma or severely mentally retarded, wouldn't be aware that they're fat.
|
..but a surprisingly number of obtuse people do not truly realize their stupidity. |
Lots of excuses on this thread: Fat people are healthy. Fat people are depressed. Thin people are jerks. It's impossible to lose weight. Exercise doesn't work. Cutting back calories doesn't work. It's my ethnicity. It's my body type. It's okay if I'm fat because I do triathalons. I overeat instead of keeping a bottle of booze in my desk drawer.
|
That would mean that more than 50 percent of Americans have experienced some sort of terrible trauma, mostly sexual abuse? Impossible. Plus, young children are obese now too. Are you saying "just about every single" one of them has already experienced some trauma? |
Are people here truly that judgmental that they are blindly diagnosing strangers? Wow. I thought people here were supposed to be smart. |
No, the jerk PP admits she's fat. I don't think anyone else was called a jerk. Minor point, I know.... |
Ah, okay. Let's cut that one off the list. I was just struck by all the helplessness expressed here by women who are overweight: I can't, I won't, it's impossible, it's not my fault, it's inevitable. It's so defeatist. It's not everyone posting here, but it's the majority. There was another recent thread in which an OP asked for general advice for losing a few pounds. Some people suggested exercise. And cutting calories. And several militant and rather angry posters went nuts saying that exercise does not work, running does not work, exercise makes you eat more, you'll get fatter with exercise. It's like they firmly believe that losing weight through exercise and proper nutrition is impossible. So why bother? And how DARE you bring it up? These are the same beliefs expressed here. Hopeless and very defensive. |
Let's face it losing weight is hard work and requires effort. If it was easy, everyone would be thin. I have been thin my entire life, but I really have to work for it now that I am in my 40's. The people making the excuses will continue to be overweight and the people who work at it will continue to stay slim. It is a hard, sometimes agonizing, and slow process. Most people quit before they start seeing results. My 2 cents. |
Agreed. |
