My spouse keeps trying to get me to go to industry but so far I just can't fathom it. I love seeing patients. Unfortunately my 135k salary after 6 years of training (fellowship after residency) and ten years in practice isn't increasing. BIL learned last month what I make and was shocked. He makes double in IT with a bachelors and certainly no charts to do all hours of the night or 3 am calls. |
Not every doc bases their specialty choice based solely on compensation.... Shocking I know. |
My DH is an anesthesiologist who works primarily in neuro and ortho surgeries, and this is true for him as well: the implant reps often make more than he or the surgeon do for a particular case. They also don't have 6 figure debts from medical school. |
Best post in the thread. |
No being a lawyer is embarrassing |
| DH is a dual speciality doc (peds + ER) and he teaches. He makes somewhere between $350K - $400K. Hospitals all over the country are always after him but he has a cushy schedule that he loves - one that he knows he won't get anywhere else. He's also worked at the same place for over 20 years now. He's been good to them and they've been even better to him. |
Except law school is a gamble. Sure, you could end up being one of the lucky ones who makes several hundred thousand in big law. However, that's less than 10% of the graduating class. Everyone else will still have tons of debt and crap jobs to show for it. Doctors on the other hand can consistently count on a solid paycheck. The superstar surgeons/specialists also have the opportunity to make millions. Medicine is a more secure profession. Even if you go to a mediocre med school and are average, you can still count on at least 150k after your MD. Lawyers don't have anywhere near that type of security. |

| Any radiologist? |
He's PEM-trained? Hmm, my spouse is in that field but doesn't make nearly that much--however, has not been out of training that long, and still does crazy clinical shifts and is therefore chronically sleep-deprived. I worry about burnout soon.

| 300k. Emergency Medicine. |
My friend is a radiologist and earns about 300k. She has great hours and lives 5 minutes from home. |
Rad Onc - $450k. |
Yes, he's PEM-trained. We went through the same thing - the sleep deprivation did become a little scary as it almost resulted in a car accident one night. I wish I could tell you it gets better, but if yours is a workaholic like mine, it doesn't. DH loves his job - and also loves giving our family the world - so he'd work 24/7 if he could. Even though he probably makes more in his real estate investments and stocks than his actual job. |
You sound lazy. Just because somebody thinks the system is stupid, does not mean he or she wants to go for the highest paid speciality. Dentists probably get paid well but if I have to look into people's mouths everyday I would die. Why do orthordontists deserve such high pay with zero stress? |
