Psychiatrist here. The biggest downside is that it is the minivan of specialties. No matter how great it is and how perfectly it fits your life, you have to deal with the fact that no one will ever, ever think you are cool. |
I mean the downsides depend on who you are and how you considered your life in medicine would look. Do you want to see patients in a physical sense -- because if you want to be listening to heart and lungs and looking at EKGs and blood work, merely talking to people isn't going to be enough for you. And let's be real while there is a push towards mental health, there is still a stigma amongst many (not all) drs. that you only become a psychiatrist if you can't hack it in real medicine. Obviously this doesn't matter to those who really WANT to do psychiatry -- they don't care what anyone else things. But I find it does matter a bit to the ones who were never truly drawn to it but did it because it's flexible in terms of hours, job availability etc. |
Psychiatrists give out drugs. How much counseling do they really do each session? |
Another “let’s stereotype Indian people” post...what a relief—I hadn’t seen one yet today and I just felt like something was off. |
True though, i am an Indian. Sure our earning years start around 35 but we get 25 yrs at HHI of $500k+ |
