Membership at Chevy Chase Club

Anonymous
How is this place so exclusive? My coworker (a technology sales rep, just like me) just got a membership. I know for a fact he got his undergrad only at a state school and is from a working class family in NY. Granted we all make an absolute truck load of money, but that's about all.

I dont see his appeal. There are no business opportunities there and sure the golf is good, but most people in our industry are not CC people and golf is always at places in Loudoun County (many of the technology jobs are based along the Dulles corridor).

Sorry, I stand corrected. My coworker is a member at congressional. I got confused. Maybe that is easier to get into?

He knows he might be blackballed by someone.

Can you imagine how embarrassing that would be for an ego like his? He'd never risk it getting out. Far better to just continue mooching.

That darn blank gun used to scare the heck out of me. I met and maintained life long friends from CCCC. No, we were not Catholic. Our church was on the Close. I'm sure the dues were much less in the 70's, but it was a gorgeous club and with six kids I'm willing to bet my Dad got his $ worth! If my Dad was still living I believe he would say being a member was one of the many highlights of his life. My mother is ninety and still gets cards from her living friends from Westmoreland Hills and her friends from Chevy Chase Club as we called it way back when. I hope the current members are getting the same joy out of the club as our family did way back then.

In the 70s? Back when the founder was proudly boasting it would never admit a black person?

The golf course is average at best. Give that I couldn't care about the rest of the club though my wife might differ.

He has joined Chevy Chase, CC. You’re a loser, PP. A huge loser.

I found PP’s comment distasteful, but I thought President Obama joined Columbia and not ChevyChase.

Interesting word choice. Chevy had a long-standing policy of discrimination against blacks, Jews and even Catholics. Not a place he would want to be.

Yea - it’s real super easy to come up with a 120k up front deposit.

Congressional is actually more elite and more exclusive. Chevy is a more provincial local neighborhood crowd.

He probably likes the crowd better at Columbia. Many people find it to be a friendlier crowd than the Chevy crowd which is a little more stuffy and has become very Republican. The friendliest and more down to earth families I know belong to Congressional, Kenwood, or Columbia. They use the club but it’s not the center of their world or social life, whereas at Chevy many of the people I know that’s all they talk about is their club membership and their social life revolves around the club.
