+1. My adult kids have gone instate for undergrad. Oldest will be applying to 6-12 grad programs around the country including a few Ivies that are very specialized in the niche area kid wants to study and work in. Kid did well at a public in state. We told our kids you can apply anywhere you want to college for a bachelors degree, as long as it's in state and public. We are not paying for a private university. Graduate school is a whole different oyster. Of course, every 17 year old wants to go out of state! Duh. But our kids have said they are glad in hindsight that they stayed in state for four years of undergrad, and that we as their parents were within an hour to few hour drive away if they needed us. And they did need us occasionally. There's nothing wrong with staying in state for a solid undergrad education.
