DC Public and Public Charter Schools

Many Walls families? Highly unlikely. And we’re talking Sidwell and GDS tuition here, not SJC. There are levels to private schools/tuition. |
Sure, Jan. 🙄 |
+100 - we are one of those families and while we are applying to Walls, we prefer the in boundary PS and will likely go there, even if DC gets into Walls. We are also not white, so I think that plays into it. Many of our friends who aren’t white don’t want to go private either. |
DP, and I don’t know about Walls, but I know quite a few wealthy families at JR. These are folks who absolutely could have very comfortably afforded Sidwell/GDS type schools (with kids who could have gotten in) and chose JR. My own family could have afforded it (not very comfortably but without huge sacrifice) and never considered it. Many people don’t want private school. Many people *value* public school. |

I don’t believe for a minute that there are tons of current DCPS households running around that could comfortably afford to spend $120k after taxes every year to send 2 kids to $59k/yr Sidwell. For 4 years.
Which is not an indictment- the vast majority of people, even DC people, could not afford that luxury good. But the whole “oh we can afford to miss $60-180k a year - but we choose not to!” thing is mostly a cope. |
You can doubt it all you want, but I am personally acquainted with at least five families who could comfortably afford private and chose public—and not just public…JR. Open your mind to the possibility that not everyone thinks like you do! |
That’s your reality. Not mine. |
Exactly! |
What a weird response. I get that there are people who value private school, even if I don’t. Are you saying in your “reality” no one values public school? That it’s not possible that there are people out there with those values even if you don’t know them? |
Walls is not the school for comprehensive offerings in science and math. Not is it strong in science and math. This is widely known. Just because there is a good biology teacher or whatever doesn’t make it so. If you want a robust offering of science and math go to JR or DCI. Basis is also strong in science and math but more limited curriculum offerings and facilities. |
| Id be pissed if my kid went to Sidwell and didn't get into HYPS. No one needs to go to private school to get into Duke. |
| What other selective schools are you considering? |
|
+1. What defines "superior education"? I imagine some stuff is better at Sidwell. One thing that is surely not: World history. Sidwell has a weird approach that assigns students a focus on a small region. Walls starts with the big survey, from the beginning of time to the present, over the course of two years. I understand the goals of Sidwell's approach. I, and my DC, prefers Walls's approach. Different strokes... |
