DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| I’ve lost brain cells reading this thread. |
**Raises hand** |
| I know all parents here think their kid is the smartest, and if that is genuinely true then it probably doesn’t matter where they go, in terms of outcomes. But what if your kid isn’t the absolute smartest? My kid is probably top 30%, and I think he would benefit a lot from the education Sidwell has to offer and I think his college outcomes will be better. |
Not buying it. Right, look at the Supreme Court. The liberal justices don't fit the bill. Business titans? Mainly public school grads. The reality is that at most undergrads at colleges admitting in the single digits no longer come out of elite independent high schools. This has been the case at least a generation, maybe two. In fact, Harvard's legacy rate has dropped from more than half in the early 80s to the teens now. Look it up. |

NP. I don't doubt that my kid would benefit a lot from the education Sidwell has to offer either. I could even be persuaded that his college outcomes might be better if he went there. It's the 50K price tag that wouldn't work for us. If he got in, I doubt that we'd get fi aid living in a big DC house that's worth at least 3x what we paid 20 years ago. We'll have the same problem paying for college and one of us was DOGE'd and hasn't found a good new job.

Not buying it? It’s a good thing I’m not trying to sell you anything. Six of the nine Supreme Court Justices graduated from private independent schools. That’s 67% of the Justices! As someone mentioned above, only 14% of U.S. high schoolers graduate from independent schools (and I’m certain the number was much lower when the Justices graduated). Let’s focus on facts, not your feelings: Chief Justice John Roberts: La Lumiere School (Independent Catholic Boarding/Day School) Justice Clarence Thomas: St. John Vianney's Minor Seminary (Independent Catholic Boarding School) Justice Samuel Alito: Steinert High School (Public School) Justice Sonia Sotomayor: Cardinal Spellman High School (Independent Catholic School) Justice Elena Kagan: Hunter College High School (Public Magnet School) Justice Neil Gorsuch: Georgetown Preparatory School (Independent Catholic Boarding/Day School) Justice Brett Kavanaugh: Georgetown Preparatory School (Independent Catholic Boarding/Day School) Justice Amy Coney Barrett: St. Mary's Dominican High School (Independent Catholic School) Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson: Miami Palmetto Senior High School (Public School) |
All I see is public school and Independent Catholic Schools, which are very different from "independent" schools. Catholic schools are appealing to middle class people because they are rigorous and serious. they aren't full of the type of families that choose Sidwell or GDS, , which have a MUCH higher price tag, and are full of people looking for the "network" effects. |
Is it even possible for a person to be more insecure than you? |
Independent Catholic school isn't anything similar to an Independent school the way you think of it. It just means it's not controlled by a diocese/parish or affiliated with a specific religious order. It's still a Catholic school. Nobody would confuse Cardinal Spellman in the Bronx and it's $12,000 tuition with Horace Mann or Fieldston or any of the independent NYC private schools. St John Vianney closed in 1969 and wasn't even an independent Catholic school. Granted, Prep and likely La Lumiere are more like a Sidwell (though very few looking at Prep are considering Sidwell or any co-ed private school), but it's more accurate to say that 3 attended public, 3 attended Catholic, and 3 attended Catholic / prep schools. It's 100% accurate to say that not a single one attended a truly independent school like Sidwell. |
