It looks like it was chronic drug addiction.

His first rehab was age 15.

My guess is he killed his father first, mother was rendering aid to the father and then he killed the mother.

It’s ineffective when people are only doing it out of force. Same as all therapy.

It has to be choice and the person wants to get help. Many mentally ill folks do not want to be on drugs and don't think they need drugs.

Then they need to be locked up and not free to harm others.

PP here. We need to change the laws, and I have a very clear idea of what mental illness and a drug addiction looks like from family members and close friends' children.

+1 and very likely has a mental illness diagnosis other than just drug addiction. Similar to many homeless individuals, he has a history of resistance to interventions.

This. There are always dumb, thoughtless people of every political persuasion. But you didn't see comments like that from Obama, Biden, Harris, the Clintons, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, etc. Because they understand they have a moral obligation to show respect and kindness for the dead and for those who grieve them. And because obviously no one deserves to be murdered in cold blood under any circumstances. They chose to be adults instead of petty children, even though Kirk had said very critical and even hurtful things about him in his life.

It is. Go vote. Hold him accountable for this behavior when you decide who your congress people will be, who your senator will be, who the next president will be. Talk about this behavior with people you know and let them know you don't want a president, or anyone in a position of power, who treats people like this. It will take 3 years to make it happen but we can in fact "fire" him and those who support him. Let's do it.

Same. My brother just did another stint in rehab this summer. My parents are so hopeful (and footed the bill), my mom constantly talks about how much better he's doing. I want to share her optimism but we've been down this road so many times at this point. Even when rehab is effective for some time, eventually people leave and rejoin society, and lose whatever was working in rehab.

I don't know what the answer is. My brother is a dad and that was sort of when I lost hope -- when he couldn't get it together for his kid, who I know he loves. If not even that will overcome the addiction, I just don't know that anything will.

I've been thinking about my addict/mentally ill brother as well -- he ended up killing himself. That rage can go outward or inward (or both) and whenever he acted out while under the influence, he never really understood why we were so upset the next day. Maybe he literally didn't remember.

I also have a mentally ill sibling but without drug addiction. Her rage mostly turned inward and there have been suicide attempts. She burned some valuable old books of my father and can curse a hostile blue streak when she is off her meds. She has a sweet and kind personality otherwise. I would like to think that she would never do something like that but you never know with a diseased mind.
