I'm the PP who referred to her as a crafty politician. This is a very well written piece about Machado and Trump. I don't know much about her so had to look up in Wikipedia. She definitely has been active in her opposition to Maduro and she has experienced repercussions from the regime as a result. She appears to be popular. OTOH, there is a good argument that Trump's 1.0 maximum pressure sanctions contributed to the collapse of Venezuela. I don't know if her support of his military policy towards Venezuela at this time includes blowing up ships in international waters (and there is some evidence that some people killed on those boats were impoverished fishermen--impoverished in part because of sanctions--desperate to feed their families). I hope it does not and that she can nudge him towards ending that practice, which I would expect from a peacemaker. I'm also not sure what she hopes for from Trump--the Marines landing? Something like the capture of Noriega? (If Trump believes, as he claims, that TdA is embedded in the Venezuelan govt, why has he not pushed Bondi to indict Madura for trafficking in arms and drugs? After all, if that coke was headed to Caribbean islands as a waystation to Florida, then Bondi should be the right person to figure this out). Obama got the prize because the Nobel laureate liked him. They actually said something like that. They liked his message of peace during his campaign.
I don’t know if they like Trump. Plus Trumps other messages have NOT been about peace. It’s the whole package. Not one act. Trump is not the peace prize package. |
