That’s just plain nuts. |
Which middle school and do you have any sense whether this is similar at the other middle schools? It seems crazy that there is no curriculum? Is this because VA does not follow common core? I rember a math teacher saying that none of their textbooks “fit”…? |
This is the DC metro area. I do this for a living. Get off the ATS thread. Your ignorance should be an embarrassment to you. |
Do what for a living? 😂 |
USDA ag policy. (as a lobbyist) |
LOLLLLLLLLLL |
This. We aren’t talking about fake cheeze vs real Velveeta. |
Yes, it is crazy. Curriculum decisions are made and purchased at the county level. APS doesn't have a math curriculum. IXL is used for practice problems at the middle school level, but it's not a curriculum. My kid is assigned all sorts of things from random websites to use to learn math. |
Bitter you can’t pay for private school? My kids are at ATS. Will send them to private for middle school but saving 1000s in the meantime. |
We are at ATS. One of the teachers told us that basically APS purchased a curriculum called SAVAAS (this is for elementary school… not sure what they did with high school and middle school). The curriculum they purchased sucks and all the teachers hate it. Reason they purchased it is it’s one of the few curriculums that allows you to custom it to the Virginia standards of learning. But the problem is curriculum doesn’t make sense. Like it doesn’t build on concepts and everything is not the right order. So what ATS is doing instead (and I’m assuming the rest of schools in Arlington) is using a combo of apps and worksheets. The apps used to be reflex and dreambox but now they replaced dreambox with IXL. |
Oh honey, this comment lets us know you think ATS is comparable to private ES. Not even close. You’re saving money, at the expense of a better product. |
Plenty familiar with private. You’re bitter you can’t afford it. |
That’s great. If you hate public schools so much please explain to me what you are doing commenting on posts about public schools in a public school forum. We get it. Public schools aren’t that great. There’s an entire private school forum. Go post there. |

Older kid went private during pandemic. Younger kid got into ATS.
Class sizes and calendar were biggest advantage of private. School culture and parent involvement at ATS trump the private school. ATS for elementary is great. Private for secondary if you can afford it. |
I'm the cheese lobbyist. I did this. Sent kids to private middle and then back to APS for high school. I will say the schools my kids went to did not serve fancy French cheese unless I put it in the lunches myself. |
