Proudly harboring the undocumented

Just pointing out that the OP's "gringo" assessment of the situation is likely not consistent. I'm not saying the black slaves didn't call their Democrat masters virtuous gods, that probably happened. Just, we all know they skedaddled as soon as was possible.

Now it’s changed to they supposedly have a legal lawn service they pay that doesn’t do as good of a job but they only pay the undocumented guy during a season of work for years. Even though they have 7 acres they use him no more than 50 hours a year (50 hours x $30).

OP you’re not the hero you think you are. If you were why wouldn’t you be giving him steady work year round?

And somehow OP knows he doesn’t drink (not sure why there is something wrong with the gardener having a cold beer on a Friday after work), and has an impeccable background.

$30 per hour is not being well paid. You and your neighbors have been taking advantage of him. In between $50 - $100 per hour would be acceptable.

Make it up to him now by seeing what he needs and provide it.

She said she and her neighbors pay him very well.

I have no qualms about this. What is going on in this country right now is morally wrong. These people work their butts off, are law abiding good people and make our country great. THEY’RE doing that. Not MAGA.

So funny. You sound like a slave owner. Kudos for treating your slave so nicely.

The Trump administration is employing Nazi tactics in Washington, D.C. They are breaking the law every single day, over and over and over. There is nothing that OP is doing that's wrong. She is protecting an innocent person who just wants to earn money honestly and live decently and safely. There is nothing wrong with that. What's wrong is a country that won't let decent, hard working people in when there are jobs here for them and people like OP eager to hire them.

Yes, $36 an hour is an excellent rate for yard work, far exceeding the average wage for the industry. The average pay for a landscaping or lawn care worker typically ranges from $17 to $25 per hour, with specialized or management roles earning more. A rate of $36 an hour reflects high skill, premium service, or specialized work.

You do realize that what you are paying and what his hourly earnings are, are not the same things right? He has overhead, maybe less than a legal worker, but overhead all-the-same. Someone else walked through it, but his wages will be roughly half of what you pay him.

Nope. Let me spell it out further for you in language that I assume even you can understand.

He tells me he's coming, he drives here from a neighboring town, he parks in my driveway, and he does the work. He uses my tools and doesn't bring anything with him. On the rare occasion that he needs something that's not here, he tells me and I order it for his next visit. (Example: he said he needed a larger wheel barrel, so I bought one.) There's no "overhead" involved for which he is responsible except the price of gas. It's a 15 minute drive, more or less.

Care to name any "overhead" that I'm missing?

I pay him. Well. He comes whenever he wants, works as long as wants, and does whatever he thinks is needed and as he pleases. To suggest that that's treating him as a "slave" in an insult to slaves.

As I said before, if he finds a better opportunity and "skedaddles," I'll be happy for him. Truly. But I'm apparently paying him well enough and treating him respectfully enough that that's not happening.

As for the "gringo" slur, here's the thing: I'm fluent in Spanish. I've lived, done graduate graduate studies and work worked in Latin America. My oldest was born there. My spouse and kids (as adults) have lived and volunteered in different countries there -- and for years at a time during real work, to be clear, not some bullshit "build a church instead of a school and leave" kind of way. And I have latina grandchildren.

So, yeah, sure, I'm a gringo. But I have no doubt I am more versed in Latin American culture and people than you are.

I pay 36, as I've said time and again. I'm confident I'm paying him well, especially for where the house is (a second home, by the way).

And I'm sure you'd love to take us back to the slavery era, MAGA Man.

This is pretty elaborate troll. If not, it’s an exceptionally sad reflection of how insanely classist liberals are. Maybe OP can tell us how gracious she is for allowing “her lawn man” to “use the pool room bathroom.” JFC

Such a cop out by the MAGA folks to label the guy an indentured servant. There's nothing in our relationship that makes him one. By their definition, anyone who works for anyone else is an indentured servant.

I'll spell it right out: the premise of the posters who are so worked up by what I'm doing is that I have some kind of moral obligation to favor the "American" worker simply because they had the happy accident of being born here. That's bullshit. I'll hire a good and honest man regardless of where they're from and regardless of their legal status, and I'll pay them well for doing good work. I'm a conscientious objector to our flawed and racially biased immigration system. End of story.

Obviously there's a network and a warning system for when the immigration thugs are out and about. The communication network buzzes and folks quickly know what they are up to. This underground warning system will have to continue until we can get rid of this oppressive regime.

What makes me a troll? How is it "classist" to respect a hard worker, speak his language, and treat him well? I'll tell you what "classist" is: celebrating the deportation of decent and hardworking people who form the back bone of our economy without any regard to their value as real and individual human beings.

Let me continue to assure that you have no moral credibility. No really you don't. Go and find a gringo to do it, then we'll see.

Exactly. Resistance is key.
