DC CAPE SCORES

BASIS parent here. Compared to our DCPS elementary, BASIS doesn't seem to really care much about CAPE. They never really talk about it and They knock the tests out in a few days. each test has 30 questions -- at our DCPS, they would give the kids 10 questions per day, Tl/We/Th, so the ELA Math and Science take three weeks. At BASIS, they do one test per day in full, all 30 questions, so they are done in 3 days.

BASIS kids take a lot of other tests, and the within BASIS standardized tests are the ones that are important and that students and teachers are judged by.

We love the school. It would be a terrible fit for many kids, but if it works, it's an incredible opportunity to learn a ton.

Okay, but still most schools give the kids the test for the class the kid takes. And BASIS and its boosters dearly love to have good stats and talk about how very excellent BASIS is. So wouldn't an impressive Algebra I score be valuable for BASIS?

Or are they not giving the Algebra I CAPE test because they think giving the kids an easier test will look better?

No. Why would it be? As a parent, I don't care what the Algebra 1 CAPE score is. I care about which colleges admit BASIS DC students.

Why would you care more about colleges than Algebra I? Most kids who take Algebra I at BASIS leave years before they apply to college.

Am I misreading this or are Bancroft's scores a lot lower than I would expect? We have been thinking of moving into Mt. Pleasant because we have heard such great things about Bancroft. wondering if there is something going on there.

I have friends very happy at Bancroft but it's very much a desirable school because it's the EotP option for JR much like Shephard.

For example SWS, Bancroft, Brent, LT, Maury, Marie Reed, Moten, Payne, Bruce-Monroe... Many!

This isn't hard or complicated. Because 5th grade is an entry year and those kids are new to the school from a variety of backgrounds so it is hard to use data from not even a full year to draw any conclusions.

Hardy 6th grade also has more 5s than Basis - both subjects (twice as many for ELA).

But you take CAPE at the end of the school year and the kids come from a mix of elementary schools including the ones listed so only 1.5% 5th grade 5s (2 kids) is at least not impressive.

+1 I don't care about CAPE scores. Didn't care about them at ES and don't care about them now. I care about AP scores and college admissions. The only people who seem to care about CAPE scores are the denizens of DCUM.

BASIS cares less about CAPE than any of the schools my kids have attended. For other schools they spend weeks prepping, doing stupid affirmations and celebrations, etc. My BASIS kid and his friends think of CAPE week as a break in between tests that matter.

To be fair most schools don’t take CAPE at the end of the school year. Many take it in early May.
