I definitely perused the school manual to make sure it was okay. Neither short shorts, nor spaghetti strap tank tops were mentioned, so I gave her a thumbs up. If she was more curvy they'd look more skanky, but I think thin and tall girls get away with more. When I was a kid shorts had to be fingertip and straps on tank tops had to be 2 inch wide at least. I grew up in FL though and kids basically went to school in swimwear, so maybe they needed some rules. I don't think I ever wore closed toed shoes outside of PE class.

I'm in Fl too and my teen has to wear shorts longer. No tank tops (male or female) or thin straps. Honestly, what I saw (school is out here) was a lot of kids in jeans and hoodies!!! I asked dd about it and she said they kept the AC on artic in the school.

I'm, ahem, a certain age lol and I remember daisy dukes and much shorter shorts for guys too. We're all wearing capris and cargo shorts now so I don't worry about the kids enjoying their short shorts days.

Yes! The shorts that men wore in the 70s were disgusting.

Grow up. The op isn’t “fixated” on this she is just inquiring into the parental mindset in allowing the dress.
The young girls are *trying* to sexualize their bodies. That’s the whole point of wearing shorts that look like underwear. It’s a normal part of adolescence, but it IS about attracting the leering glances of boys and men. In fact it is so obviously for this reason that the girls dress this way, that I find it strange when parents don’t question it- you have a duty to educate and set guidelines them in safety, academics, nutrition, good sleeping habits, safe sex, screens, financial independence…. But educating and setting guidelines for them in dress is being a “perverted creep.”
Got it. 🙄

No, it absolutely isn't. That's perverse. I have a teen DD and she has zero interest in boys at this age. She's tall, thin and not even aware there is a different sex out there but she does like her short shorts, her crop tops because that's the style. It's not about sexuality all the time.

LOL! Mom, she knows that there is a different sex out there.

I’m shocked that they would want to go to school and sit in close proximity to others with their butt cheek edges hanging out all day.

Thank God for uniforms!

And as others have said - not a class issue - fancy private school kids have them under their skirts, which come off the moment they get home, exposing their way too short shorts. I sigh because my older girls do this and now my 9 year old is rolling her shorts to make them shorter.

The girls at private schools wear their uniform skirts so short you can see their cheeks.

This. The Catholic school in my hometown was St. Gertrude and everyone (including the girls themselves) called them “Dirty Gerties.”

Oy vey, talk about a chip on your shoulder. Decades later you're still holding a grudge against and smearing all of those pretty, affluent, and proper Catholic girls. Yeah they're affluent and pretty... but... but... they were trashy drunken whores who hiked their uniform skirts up! Let it go.

Catholic school is where you go if your parents don’t think you are behaving properly.

Sorry your parents couldn't afford it. That doesn't mean the more affluent girls there were all drunken sluts. Let it go.

Afford it? The one by us was like less than $5k a year back then. Even now it’s cheap. That’s not why people didn’t use it.

I have 3 girls and oldest is 12 so we are starting to have conversations about clothes. None of my girls are allowed to wear clothes that sexualize their bodies precisely because they aren’t interested in boys and they don’t need to be wearing crop tops that imitate “sexy “ clothes for women. There are plenty of cute clothes that aren’t crop tops and shorts that show butt cheeks.

I have no problems with my girls wearing those clothes when they are older and seeking attention from boys - I certainly did. But not to school - I don’t care if all the other girls are wearing them. and I will definitely warn them that older men will also be looking at their bodies and to be careful.

Isn’t your job as a parent to have conversations about clothes and what it means with your kids? I do understand picking your battles and letting your kids grow up, but clothes are part of self-expression - isn’t that worth a conversation and not just letting them mindlessly do whatever their peers are doing?

Who do you think creates the “style”? Perverted nihilists who run the media, fashion and textile industries.

That may be true but girls don't always put on those shorts and think "Oooooh, I am attracting a male"

Actually, they do. These girls want to turn on men and boys by dressing provocatively - they may not be ready for a sexual encounter per se, but making a boy horny by their beauty gives them a sense of power.

Look, that may be true for some girls but it's not true for a lot. I can guarantee mine aren't thinking about any of this when they put on their jean cutoffs.
They understand more than you think.

Nah! They know that the pervy "old" man, the landscaping crew, the trash collector, the balding coach - are ALSO watching them and getting horny. Even if these girls say "ewww" they are secretly excited about it. The same goes for their moms.

Don't these parents worry about stalkers etc?

This is the part I don't understand, especially as the moms post dozens of bikini and prom dress photos all across social media.

Well, as Dave Chappelle once said, "How old is 15, really?"

My 60 year old wife likes to wear her tennis outfits everywhere. I don't know if that's worst than DD wearing the booty shorts.

^I know which one I prefer.

Guess OP doesn't remember "short shorts" or "spanx" or "hot pants".

For sure. I remember all of us dressing to teach the hot coaches and teachers decades ago in Jr High and HS.
Learned not to tease too hard though, cause then you might get bit.
