OP, I’m a Michigan Ross Alum and a Partner at a consulting firm. Let’s figure a way for me to connect with you or your son. At minimal, I can help him polish resume and discuss job search strategy.

I haven’t read all the posts, what type of function or industry is he pursuing?

Please let us know if the OP contacts you. I’m still thinking this might be a troll posting.

OP here. I hate it when people say “troll posting” without having facts.

DS had internships in his sophomore and junior year, and received a full time position upon graduation. However, the offer was rescinded due to the company ran out of VC funding. He received another offer in December but it was cancelled because the whole department got layoffs. He reached out to several of his mentors who were Ross alum for advice and resume read. Two of them were fired because they were on probationary federal employees.

DS has been researching/applying for jobs as a full time job in itself, but he is not having much luck. Two of his friends from Ross are also currently jobless. He is looking for positions all over the country. His cousin graduated from Ross last year, and worked for Intel. He was informed by his manager that he will be layoffs in two weeks.

Your first post was made around 10.00 AM. Your next post was made 10 hours later. Hard to have facts when they aren’t forthcoming in a timely manner. That’s was why some were suspicious of the authenticity of your original statement. You also made it sound like your DS was only looking for work locally in the DMV. He still is in Ann Arbor, since graduation is next weekend, which also brought confusion to some of us. I wish him well in his search.

DP, I would add your kid already got a rescinded job offer. This is about the economy, not the school. You can tell this by the other bad news in your environment. There is no school that can fully insulate you from the economy. I just noticed an acquaintance recently "left" McKinsey after 18 years.

+1

OP's additional info indicates the problem is not about Michigan as much as about how our economy has been blown to bits in the past 3 months by chaotic "decisions" made by the current administration.

Agree with everyone about the root cause(s) of her child’s employment. However, we can all empathize with her son’s situation and offer encouragement and actionable advices. I’m assuming many reading this thread are Michigan alumni so let’s demonstrate the power of our network and support this family.

It sounds like OP’s kid has had very good luck landing jobs, but the jobs seem to disappear. One of them will stick. Good luck to the kid!

Your post is misleading. He has an undergraduate degree in business not an MBA. HUGE difference.

Also, OP, he would have easily found a job if he hadn't limited his search geographically to be near mommy.

I don't get why the OP is blaming Ross for this. Yes, perhaps the OP would have had her kid make a different decision if she knew the economy would be in bad straits when he graduated. But all the same--anyone making a decision to fund an undergrad education at 90K a year knows there are substantial risks involved in terms of employment outcomes. Starting salaries are higher than average in elite business/finance--but those positions are hard to get (and have always been sought after).

I heart this poster. What a great person!

My kids offer was recently terminated for lack of work. Now scrambling to find something new. When someone asks what dc is doing I send their job was cancelled, and all say the same thing, happening everywhere.

He didn't.

They didn’t secure internships last summer so this is not a “blame Trump” situation. Not a “blame Michigan” situation either. WS is always feast or famine. And stop saying “The Street,” you DC people are so cringy.

Only aiming for banker in wall street could cause problems in a down economy. There's onther jobs in finance and other cities as well.

OP, if your son has not already do so, have him join the UMich Alumni Assc of Washington, DC. Attend the social events to network.

You can draw a line in any direction through a single data point.

Also, give it time.

You can graduate from anywhere, but if you don’t have any meaningful internships then it will be tough to find a job.

100% agree. The best way to get a job is to have a job. You are better off working through college than joining a bunch of clubs. And over the summers. Can be menial type work too.

He will land on his feet. He sounds like he has great experience. Just be patient. Good luck.

I am pretty sure they cast a much wider net than just finance.

Ross is 100% better than UVa.

Was ur kid doing well academically at Ross?

I went to Ross and it’s not 100% better than Darden. They are comparable.

Her son did well enough to land an internship and job offer with a VC. The job fell through because of lack of funding.
