Are you clinically insane? Michigan is solidly a tier above UVA.

Disagree. Largely the same. For research-heavy areas like engineering and hard sciences I might agree. For anything else I disagree and would lean towards Virginia being slightly better, but not much. Definitely not meriting your hyperbole.

Your career network has way more tentacles at those schools. The OP mentioned that career services was no help, but what about fraternity connections or reaching out to alums eager to hire him simply because he's a Wolverine? My guess is OP didn’t mention those options because they weren’t available. There’s a reason very few kids in business or finance majors at Bucknell or Colgate graduate jobless, and it isn’t just because of the academic reputation. Attending one of those schools, joining a top-tier fraternity, building a relationship with career services early, and tapping into the alumni network is basically a cheat code for stacking cheese right out of college.

I'm generally ambivalent towards fraternities. But reading these sorts of posts really turns me off. Yuck.

The hyperbole always makes me wonder how many kids post here.

USNWR has had UVA and Michigan both in top-5 public universities for years now. In the category of public universities, they are in the same tier.

Doesn't matter if you plan to only live in the DC metro.

I don’t understand why he isn’t looking at NYC west coast Chicago or any other city??? Why go to Ross if all you want to do is live in VA?

Accountants will always be in demand.

And yes, if you or he only wanted to live in the DC area,.I would have been best to go to college in VA, DC, or MD.

He needs to search for more positions in the mid west at this point.

I don’t think OP said their child is limiting their search to the DMV. They said the education cost $300k because they live in the DMV (eg OOS for Michigan).

While this happens I think almost at every school… even the Ivies, this is such a troll post.

Personally know someone who was full pay top of class from Wharton last year and it took almost until December after June graduation to find a job at a small local investment company. And they never had any ‘top’ internships. So this can happen at any school.

UVA for its size packs a punch. We thank our lucky stars our kid is there. There is every possible resource and opportunity available. People in the know, know.

This is the reason why colleges actively search for the following types of students in admissions:
- gregarious/extroverted and outgoing
- connected (parents already have senior-level big jobs)
- have already shown grit and stamina in securing competitive internships.

Kids with the above will be easy to place and not end up as “failure up launch” - potentially like this kid - always a university’s worst fear.

Wow, so I guess FGLI shouldn’t bother

Colgate doesn’t have a business or finance major. It’s a liberal arts school.

unemployment has been at record lows for 5 years now

Right, so get out there and grab that job stocking shelves at Walmart! Or making $13 an hour as a daycare assistant at KinderCare! Or both since none of these open jobs carry benefits, and everyone has to cobble together three of them
