Top 20 schools Dept. of Education left off the naughty list

The list was made up of schools that had open investigations about anti-semetic conduct. No investigation -- not on the list.

I think it's because they were tied to policies under the former president, who resigned. Not sure what campus climate is like now.

Penn is light years improved since fall 2023. The brief encampment spring 2024 was mostly non-penn folks but once cleared out there have been continued improvements. Penn is not a current problem compared to the schools called out.

Wisconsin did an amazing and totally appropriate job of balancing free speech with the rules and laws about not camping. Police were present, but they did not infringe on their right to speech.

I warned my kid that some of the protesters were plants and instigators so it was best to avoid the area, but it was in a main thoroughfare. Kid said they never felt unsafe and were proud of the school for defending free speech and also for enforcing the laws about camping.

I guess that’s just too “American” for this fascist administration.

Vanderbilt has done a great job providing ample space for debate and dialogue, but not allowing buildings to be taken over, students and staff harmed, students barred from entering classrooms or the library. That has meant our Jewish students have a space as safe as every other student. Non Jewish parents like me support their efforts. People pay a lot for education - that students have the right to access, without harassment.

no. other colleges had people resign, even presidents.

this list is typical for this admin: a list was made, was shown around a table and everyone took their favorite school off for no real reason other than alumni status or they like the football team or whatever. totally random and subjective and whatever the fat white guys thought in the moment. the conversations went like this:

"take notre dame off, my son is there."
"done. anyone else?"
"can I add a school? I heard about this one thing on Joe Rogan and it's just a woke bs"
"of course. add, remove, whatever you want"

If that’s the case, how come Ohio State (Vance’s alma mater) is on the list?

Who??

It won't because 1600 PA Ave Mag-a-lagas had an offspring that attended

Wesleyan's president was smart about how the school, which is know as a very socially active school, approached the whole Israel-Gaza kerfuffle. I encourage you to google what the school's reaction was after October, 2023.

I'm at JHU every day, and the situation was pretty peaceful and tame here and resolved peacefully after the president met with them. And yet we are on the list, for what? Not setting dogs and firehoses on peaceful protesters?

Because it is a university that receives/d the most funding? Or was it real estate pettiness between your fav pres or someone in his family and the city of Balt or univ?

Penn was recently put on the naughty list. Trump admin threatened to withhold funding due to Lia Thomas.

There have been a number of antisemitic incidents, but they were condemned in no uncertain terms and disciplinary action promised.

Here is the ADL report card. Not perfect, but surprised they were seen to rise to the level of the "list."

So basically any school that gets a "C" is due to student-generated campus climate issues, even if admin response and Jewish life on campus are above average to excellent. If the problem is the students, and admin is responding correctly, what else is a university to do?

I looked at the ADL report card for schools I know about.

I am not Jewish but I have Jewish friends and I am a college parent.

It didn't seem like a very useful scorecard. I didn't feel like I could use it to advise whether schools I wanted to recommend are safe or unsafe regarding community prejudices (classroom feel) vs. physical attacks on students wearing yarmulkes, etc.

This is something I greatly disliked about the ADL’s scorecard. A school offering all the services for Jewish student life and ensuring that students will be heard is struck for a protest the admin cannot stop, but a school offering no community building or protections for Jewish students is rated decently? It’s a list that prioritizes campus that thinks of Jewish students as afterthoughts

I agree about the ADL scorecard being less than ideal but at least it breaks down the score so you can know what is driving the “grade”. For our top schools for both kids we had them visit the Hillel and speak with some of the Hillel staff to see if they seemed like a good fit. For this reason, in this current atmosphere, our student is picking a somewhat lower ranked school where the Jewish life seems more vibrant and there are more supports (no, not Brandeis).

The ADL also said Musk’s salute was not what it looked like. At this point does anybody take the ADL seriously?
