McLean going downhill

McLean has few panhandlers compared to most of Northern Virginia. The people in McLean are too cheap to hand out cash, so the panhandlers go to poor areas where people are more empathetic.

Sadly untrue, as there are suckers to be found everywhere. Based on the responses here, McLean has its fair share of saps ripe for the plucking.

Literally almost every corner in annadale, (little river turnpike), alexandria, parts of Arlington and fairfax have panhandlers on them. OP come take a drive.

I live in McLean and know that intersection well. There are various different people that panhandle there. It does seem new in the last couple of years. A decade ago I didn’t see people there, or even around Tysons.

I used to routinely see the same panhandler at an intersection in Tysons in the mid/late 90s. Then one day he popped up in South Arlington. He was very distinctive (african with one arm and horrible burn scars. he never wore a shirt while panhandling) so it was pretty clearly same guy. It's always been around the area. There were others too, just less memorable.

What a dumb comment. You just sound bitter, guess you're stuck living in one of the poor areas.

Mclean has never been desirable to those in the know/true wealthy. We own two large properties in that area and rent out to middle eastern/indian families primarily.

I always notice those driving lower end, cheaper vehicles are far more generous with handouts to beggars vs those driving expensive, luxury vehicles. Rich folk don’t care about beggars even if they came up the poor road.

Wealthy people spend their money prudently, that's how they became wealthy. Giving it away to able-bodied beggars is not how they became rich.

Many jobs will be lost in both the government and private industry, and many will leave the area. A lot of people come here for jobs, but that will change. You can argue whether that’s a good or bad thing in the long run I guess. But if you’re in the market for a house you should wait a couple of years or so and snap up some bargains.

That's one hypothesis. The opposite is just as likely to happen. Things remaining the same is just as likely to happen. In other words, nobody knows. The way it appears now despite the previous messaging: In no way Trump's administration and DOGE and an army of tech billionaires are making it about reducing spending, if anything it's increase in spending. They want to do more, not less. How do you "revamp" stuff without creating extra jobs? and many of these jobs will be in IT/tech sector which isn't the lowest paying compared to Fed jobs being lost. The only way you could be possibly right is if they decide to "shut down" DC altogether and migrate new jobs elsewhere with all the work done remotely. But they want RTO and to fill empty DC DT offices that are paid for but underutilized.

I’ve heard they want to export around 30% of the fed jobs to other states. Plus it seems they will be eliminating many others. Then there will be the loss of people who won’t tolerate the conditions being imposed on them, like ratting on coworkers, RTO and such. The ones who can will find new jobs elsewhere. The ripple effect on other businesses and sectors will be quite significant.

You "heard".. And you also extrapolated to suit whatever you want to believe. In other words, it's an opinion just like all the others.

You don’t believe your victorious candidate? He’s coming for you too, like it or not.

The only things I can hear victorious candidate announce is more spending. Perhaps you are hard of hearing.

I guess you’re not listening to what he has to say then. Don’t blame you really.

he is moving government functions to Mar-a-Lago? and all the fed and related contractor jobs to FL? DC to be renamed as a new Detroit?

In her state of the state address, Gretchen Whitmer painted a very rosy picture for the resurgence of Detoit. Maybe she could replace The Bowser.

The same people handing cash to beggars play the lotto and throw more money away. The wealthy know the value of saving and investing. Donations are made in a planned manner. Not to randos on the street.

I suppose I do live in the poor part of Langley Farms. Our house is only worth about $5M compared to the $10-$20M houses.
And yes, I do know how cheap the wealthy are. They offload their Christmas food baskets in April at our McLean church's foodbank and want a receipt for a charitable deduction.

There’s going to be a lot more panhandlers as Trump destroys the local economy. You might even see old neighbors out there.

The irony in this statement!

I prefer my donation to be direct - to those who need it. When you donate to "charities" who do you think in getting the $$ - 95% goes to the losers who run the charity. When I give to those on street, I know exactly who is getting it. I don't care about tax breaks - I'm much richer than most living in McLean BTW so a little bit saved on taxes is mice nuts. I enjoy handing $$ to street people.

The pp had good points. You on the other hand have a weak reply.
