Richmond Strikers and Kickers Merging

Confirmed...Richmond Kickers, Strikers, and United merge with ECNL HQs and have a baby together. Gender reveal will be wild.

If you look at the ECNL-RL VA pages on the app for all age groups, the total number of teams is more than the teams listed, i.e. 2010G RL shows 20 teams total on the right hand side, but there's only 19 teams in the standings, 2008G RL shows 19 teams total, but only 17 listed...schedules aren't out yet either, but maybe they start games later

I thought Richmond United was the darling club of ECNL. They are going MLS Next? Seems like a lot of fanfare if they are just going to have a second ECNL team.

I don’t think Richmond will be so quick to jump in the lap of MLSN given how burned they got from the sudden DA extinction. DA left these clubs high and dry 4 years ago …many were left scrambling. Many of the clubs that then joined MLSN were not former DA (SYC, Alexandria). They didn’t get burned and had no affiliation to speak of so it was a win win. ECNL is financially sound. They aren’t shutting stuff down. They have structure and resources that don’t require dependency on a higher order league. MLSN doesn’t yet have a long enough economic track record to erase the memory of the complete and total DA debacle …. push comes to shove MLS will always prioritize their true academy (DCU) over any next team. Next is the cash cow-and now they have Next 2…it’s just too early to say it won’t go the way of the DA dinosaur…

I hope they polled the parents. Based on Alexandria's schedule there is a big jump in travel from current ECNL. There are teams in NY, NJ, Philly and Pittsburgh on the schedule. From Richmond that is probably as bad or worse than NOVA to Charlotte. Maybe the MLS playoffs system is better. It can't be worse than putting the 1st round on the west coast like ECNL.

RU not going into MLSN. Strikers and Kickers are merging to make one RU.

Yeah, apart from SYC, Alexandria, and Bethesda, that's a real hike for 15 or so games. More power to those families who are gonna be real road warriors (or earn some frequent flyer miles) if this happens.

Talked to some RU parents (my boys used to play for RU), RU going to MLSN this fall is what they hear. We will know for sure next Tuesday.

Interesting...Tuesday at Noon is the day.

With all the hoopla, you kinda are hoping for something dramatic and significant. I guess the clubs combining could do that, but no league changes IMO, doesn't move the needle.

Another -RL team, yawn.
