Bill Maher explains the Middle East to Gen Z: Can anyone really dispute the facts?

Anonymous
Everyone, we are in truly select company this evening! The “Just because you want something, what should we do about it?” guy has once more graced DCUM with his Chosen People presence (that’s trademarked), here to remind you that God LITERALLY gave the Jewish people title to the Holy Land (via quitclaim deed, one might presume).

Sir, please remind us again that we should all just give up and go home, resigned to the fate that Israel has in store for all of us!

He’s a comic, and jokes get a free pass…even if you find them distasteful.

Why?

Because context matters.

It would be distasteful for an elected official to say that, but it’s not judged through the same lens when a comedian with a show focused on pushing the envelope on such issues says it.

Trust me: nobody wants to live in a world where comics are silenced—particularly the ones focused on politics and pop culture.

I guess what strikes me is that no comedian would joke this way about 10/7 and if you are trying to make a case that Israel is acting in a reasonable manner setting up the case dehumanizing others makes me think you are pretty biased to begin with.

Sorry, PP.

The poster above you gets it. Just gets it.

You don’t want to ignore our comic sages. You just don’t, trust me. Their depth of knowledge makes political science professors tremble. They know about sneering about those dumbassed kids who know nothing got it? Respectfully, if you’re not twisting your mouth into a sneer while being reductive about his store ree then you’re not advancing the conversation in a productive way. If Jon Meecham isn’t smiling uncomfortably while you make your Points, why are you even opening your whore month here? Respectfully.

Bill Maher just spat truth. Accept it. Thanks.

LOL, Bill Maher won't debate anyone. Why in the hell do you think him sitting there with no one challenging him, means he "spat truth"? Please just stop thinking him reflecting your own lack of history and education is "truth."

It was sarcastic. No one with depth and a brain confuses Bill Maher for someone with depth and a brain.

"no one?" no one in the world? Absolutely not a single person? You know this for sure?

You just proved the PP's point. There is no genuine depth in his knowledge on this topic and the fact that you purposely ignore he won't allow an actual debate on his show ever at any point, is proving your own lack of critical thinking. How do you defend the fact that he is clearly scared to actually debate anyone who is Pro-Palestinian and instead, will bring on Zionists as if that's novel? He's been targeting Muslim for years. Do you ever recall him debating ANY Muslims on Islam itself or is that spot reserved for self-loathing ex-Muslims who were once fanatical and now get paid to be Zionist mouthpieces who get to lecture Muslims who've never broken the law ?

List the Muslims, Palestinians and Arabs Maher has allowed to DEBATE on his show. Just one. That's why there is no depth to the brain of his viewers. You like the fact that he is one-sided and pretend he isn't a coward for being so. he seems to have Bari Weiss on speed dial but his producers simply can't find a single person to challenge her or him on their Zionism and BS takes on the occupation.

Israel finds itself in the middle of all that. Israel most definitely has committed atrocities in response. But when your attacked like Israel was, the warmongers take control. It's a vicious cycle, but we're not allowed to talk about one side of it.

This mess of provincial ignorance you wrote, is why you have no business lecturing Gen Z. You exemplify the profound arrogance that comes with being your garden variety, know-nothing who grew up with antiquated media telling you everything you know. Your brain chose to be Swiss cheese when it comes to history. From terrorism to fanaticism to invasions to "attacked" to deposing to propping up, etc...

I don't know why people like you insist upon sharing your limitations and thinking you actually know what you're talking about. You don't.
I grew up as an American expat in the middle east. Some societies just don't tolerate freedom of thought, action, or religion. That is the real source of their conflicts with their neighbors.

... I'll add that Gen Z and young people in general don't know anything about that because we aren't allowed to criticize systems of belief if they are held by enough people. Or say for example that requiring unquestioned submission to any creed will always lead to subjugation.

I thought what he said was pretty good, though IMO, he glossed over Israel's atrocities over the years.

Agreed.

Imho, nobody on either side or somewhere in the middle has done a stellar job of pointing out what is obvious to me:

-Both sides have blood on their hands, so it’s easy for either side to cherry pick incidents and atrocities.

-Having said that, it’s obvious that there will be conflict when you have a Jewish state surrounded by arab/muslim countries—some of which are home to religious extremist terror groups (and some of which are actually led by such groups) dedicated to destroying Israel (not to mention America and the West).

Nonetheless, Maher isn’t wrong and he really wasn’t relying on opinions. At least he tried to address the lazy Zionist/colonizer line that seemingly prompted a groundswell of support by TikTok users who don’t realize that religious extremists are anti-everyone outside of their strict religious sect.

so tired of moral equivalence.

Israel is evil.

there will never be peace for Israel. never.

You don't get to simply proclaim you lived in the "middle east" and act like you know what every country is like. Have the guts to say where you lived. If it's the gulf states, then don't think you get to then comment on the Levant as if it were the same.
Anonymous
Oh, and having been in the Levant myself since I'm Palestinian, don't even try to sell that "religious fanatic" crap to me because I already know you'd be lying when our neighbors have been the same Christian family for at least three generations and we're family.

Attempting to conflate the gulf states or Afghanistan or whatever "Middle East" you lived in, doesn't mean you get to claim something about every country which isn't true and is the only way Israel can defend what it does: By preying on stupid people who think Muslims and Christians in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria etc, aren't brethren.

That kind of bigotry is more the gulf states where Israel's little "royal" slaves reside.

That I can't simply say I'm of African descent (as we all are) and claim the part with a gold mine, but Ira from Long Island can throw a Palestinian family off their land, is quite the odd thing to expect younger people to go along with as they learn actual history.

Here's a clue: The land never at any point was exclusively Jewish, it existed before religion itself, only an idiot could believe not a single Palestinian has any claim, but every current day Jew does, that you stupidly think Palestinians are 100% "Arab" instead of comprised of DNA from every invader including Canaanites and that you think it's perfectly normal for a Jewish person like Brett Ratner fleeing to Israel to avoid prosecution for RAPE charges in his actual country, gets to show up and on day one, have more rights than Palestinians.

Bill Maher has shown for years that Zionism is a mentally-unstable ideology that requires the adherent to ignore basic logic when it comes to human history and how it actually works.

Maher has never hidden his hatred of Muslims. It’s hard to like them because of their backwards treatment of women and.violent tendencies but he goes overboard so his speech was biased.

Israel has always had to defend themselves against hateful Arab countries who wouldn’t just leave them alone. But this time israel crossed the line. They are killing thousands of civilians on a daily basis for the chance to kill one Hamas leader. Killing and maiming children and their mothers will only feed new members for Hamas. Our country had an increase in people joining the armed services after 9/11. Hamas will see new members from the countless teen boys who have seen their little sister crushed by a building or even their whole family wiped out by a bomb. Who wouldn’t hate the country that did that. This isn’t the way to an agreement.

The first part is simplistic nonsense. You wrote that with a straight face? Do you even know anything about the Jewish Terrorist groups that started invading in the 20s?

Actual historians know Israel itself started every war. The "hateful Arabs" where you clearly envision us as some cartoonish stereotype with scimitars and screaming for Jewish blood, is bullsh*t. Suez Canal. Start there. The USS Liberty did not happen by accident. It was an intentional attempt at provocation which Americans simply ignore because it would hurt their beautiful minds to deal in a reality they've been trained to dismiss.
Anonymous
Sadly, his drivel here is nothing but using some ancient history to justify how some people have more rights to land than others.
And I am firmly pro-Israel. Who lived where in ancient history has no bearing on today and is an argument used to stir up territorial claims. Honestly, I am very disappointed with this one-sided drivel presentation he gave.
I thought he could do some research, but clearly now.

ICYMI: Bill Maher quickly breaks down the Middle East using history and facts for the benefit of everyone—but particularly for Chappell Roan and the TikTok generation.

Sure, he cracks jokes along the way. But his bit is grounded in history and facts.

Can anyone really dispute it? I mean, can anyone dispute the facts without resorting to the lazy knee jerk “Zionist colonizers” rhetoric…which Maher easily explains is both silly and false.

Watch the clip and then let’s talk.

Yes, dear OP, I can dispute these "facts " because they are not facts at all. They are imaginative and delusions about what qualifies as a claim to land. Further, his rant is nonsense. I am a supporter of Israel in these conflicts, but nonsense is nonsense. It would be best not to get your historical facts from a quack.

Why?

Because the death of one innocent person is just as tragic as a dozen or a hundred. There simply is no proportional sweet spot when it comes to conflict.

Fwiw, I think Maher used the example of 600 protesters for a specific purpose: to underscore the absurdity of killing the one woman as punishment for improperly covering her head. Death of one (which prompted protests leading to 600 more) in the name of religion was the point he was trying to make.

Remember: his bit was aimed at Chappell Roan and the TikTok generation, so he needed to keep it at a 6th grade level.

He didn't reach the 6th grade level and anyone "learning" from that video would end up worse informed than they started.

In this, I agree with you. I am the pp you said insulted you when I reported posts promoting hate and violence toward Jews. Maher looks beyond stupid with this rant, which is not based on fact and is war/territorial mongering. Only stupid people report to ancient history to excuse the actions of today.

Which part is tinfoil? Did I mention space lasers or are you doing that thing where you think having an actual grasp of history rather than the revisionist garbage you learned, is conspiratorial?

Your response was immature. It’s a weak stock response which has no connection to what I even wrote. Have the guts to be specific .Which part is tinfoil?
