The CDC’s latest estimates of booster uptake continue to grossly exceed actual vaccinations. The CDC claims that as of 10/19, 13.5% of US adults have taken the booster and 17.1% of adult Virginians have taken it. These claims are absurd. We have actual VA data from 10/22 that shows the CDC is overstating adult VA uptake by 8 percentage points, or by nearly twice as much. Similar overstatement is seen with other states as well. https://www.cdc.gov/covidvaxview/weekly-dashboard/ (Adult COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage & Intent NIS).
CDC NIS-ACM estimate of VA adult booster uptake (10/19): 17.1% VA adult booster uptake (10/22): 9.2% CDC overestimate of VA adult booster uptake: 7.9% NIS-ACM has overstated national adult booster uptake by 6-8 percentage points for several years, given the inherent biases in a self-reported phone survey which does not verify responses. Any yet, the CDC continues to widely cite this data. Why is the CDC not forthright about the overstatement? Two possibilities come to mind. 1) Humans have herd instincts, so if people think more people are taking the booster than actually are, they might be more inclined to take it. So overstated uptake figures could be a tool for boosting vaccination rates. 2) CDC staff brief APIC (the CDC cmte which makes booster recommendations) with NIS-ACM data. Inflated NIS-ACM data helps to support an all-age booster recommendation as it makes it appear that there is more booster demand than there actually is. |
Thank you for sharing this information. I had no idea the CDC numbers were inflated and that they get it from a self-reported phone survey. Very sciency! |

As of 11/6, 10% of Virginians have taken the 2024-25 covid booster. Uptake continues to be concentrated in the elderly, with just under 4% of children having received the new booster. https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/epidemiology/respiratory-diseases-in-virginia/data/vaccines/

Seven weeks into booster season, US adult uptake of the 2024-25 booster was roughly 10% lower than 2023-24 booster uptake, based on IQVIA data. IQVIA tabulates adult covid vaccines administered at most US pharmacies and medical offices and projects overall national figures from that. (It does not include vaccinations done at workplace/community settings.) https://www.cdc.gov/covidvaxview/weekly-dashboard/vaccinations-administered-pharmacies-medical.html
For the first seven weeks of the 2024-25 booster season, IQVIA reports that 15.4 million US adult doses were administered versus 17.7million doses in the first seven weeks of 2023-24 booster season, a 13% drop. IQVIA’s data translates into a US adult uptake share of 6% for the 2024-25 booster (10/12/24), versus the CDC’s inflated 12% uptake estimate (10/12/24) based on its NIS-ACM self-reported phone survey. There is one critical point to keep in mind when comparing 2024-25 and 2023-24 booster uptake. Since the 2024-25 booster launched three weeks earlier than the 2023-24 booster, comparisons should be done on similar “weeks of booster administration” and NOT year-to-date comparisons which would artificially inflate 2024-25 uptake given the additional weeks of booster administration. From the CDC site above, “Weekly comparisons to previous season should take into account differences between seasons in vaccine availability dates. 2023–24 COVID-19 vaccines were first available mid-September 2023, and 2024–25 COVID-19 vaccines were first available at the end of August 2024.” |

One of the most striking features of 2024-25 covid booster administration is the low uptake in children. As noted above, roughly 4% of Virginian children have received the new booster. However, in many states, uptake has been even lower. For children aged 6mo-4yrs, uptake is 1% in California, 0.2% in Florida, and 1.8% in New York. Looking at the most populous states that publicly report data:
Uptake 2024-25 Covid Booster California (11/7), All Ages 9.6%;.. 6mo-4yrs 1.0%, 5-11yrs 3.0%, 12-17yrs 3.4% Florida (11/8), All Ages 4.5%;.. 6mo-4yrs 0.2%, 5-11yrs 0.4%, 12-19yrs % 0.7% New York (11/13), All Ages 8.0%;.. 6mo-4yrs 1.8%, 5-11yrs 2.1%, 12-18yrs 2.2% Ohio (11/14), All Ages 8.0%;.. 6mo-19yrs 1.9% The above is actual vaccination data. In contrast, the CDC estimates children booster uptake via its self-reported NIS-CCM phone survey. https://www.cdc.gov/covidvaxview/weekly-dashboard/child-coverage-vaccination.html NIS-CCM overestimates actual uptake given the biases inherent in using unverified survey responses. As of 11/2, the CDC estimates that 7.9% of children have taken the 2024-25 booster, despite the fact that state vaccination data suggests children’s uptake is likely under 3%. Despite being untethered to reality, the CDC and press continue to cite the inflated NIS-CCM estimates for children's booster uptake. Doctors' office have never been the ones widely administering the covid shot even when the shots first came out it was always emphasized to go to the pharmacist. Not sure why this is. |
Can you do this for flu? No agenda, I'm just interested. Thx. |
It’s odd because you CAN get it there and they have signs for old people to get it, but didn’t even raise it. My doc said they weren’t recommending it for kids because of side effects, but they could have it if I wanted. I declined and apparently almost all other parents are too. |
I think originally it was finicky about storage but that is resolved now. |

As of 11/19, 11% of Virginians have taken the 2024-25 covid booster. Uptake continues to be concentrated in the elderly, with roughly 4.5% of children having received the new booster. The pace of uptake has slowed in the last two weeks, as we are now beyond the October window preferred by some for timing vaccines for the winter season. https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/epidemiology/res...ginia/data/vaccines/
Virginia, % of age group to receive 2024-25 covid booster (as of 11/19/24) All ages (6 mo+): 10.7% 0-4 years 4.1% 5-11 years 4.5% 12-17 years 4.7% 18-30 years 4.0% 31-49 years 7.1% 50-64 years 12.0% 65+ years 29.5% |
There continues to be greater uptake of flu shots than covid boosters in Virginia. For all ages, flu shot uptake is 25% as of 11/19. For ages 0-4 years, it is 23%, falling to 13% for ages 18-30 years before rising to 51% for 65+ years. | People are still talking about COVID? Move on. |
| I’m getting surgery soon so I got the flu and covid shots. The COVID shot’s real problem is that it makes you feel sick for a day and a half so you basically need to get it on Friday and plan to do nothing all weekend and you feel better in time to go back to work Monday morning. No one wants that. |
People are still dying from covid. Wise up. |
