College and University Discussion
| The NYT did a podcast last week talking about the post-Affirmative Action admissions data coming out of schools. The thesis of the speaker was that there seemed to now be greater socio-economic diversity among the admitted classes, and that there was a sense that highly selective colleges had been using affirmative action as a way to achieve racial, but not necessarily socio-economic, diversity. But overall the speaker (whose name escapes me) thought that colleges were in a "figuring it out" period so that statistics were likely to be all over the place. |
Nonsense. Every top school wants the smartest Black, Hispanic, and Native American students in the country. But in the wake of the Supreme Court decision, no school has figured it all out. Just checking a box doesn't work anymore. Economic diversity and great essays seem to be where universities are headed as they build their classes going forward. Sucks for the rich black kid at Sidwell Friends or GDS that was counting on checking a box. But it gives a smart Black or Hispanic kid at Magruder or Seneca Valley who can write a great essay a chance now with the more selective colleges. Everyone is competing today, With the Asians and the Whites and the rich private school kids. Applicants can't check a box anymore and expect the automatic boost. It's not a terrible thing. |
Did you watch the Olympics? Saw the number of Asian-Americans doing US proud? |
No, I didn’t |
Yeah, well, that is why you are so ignorant. Go and educate yourself. In this age and day, you have no excuse. Information and video footage about the Olympics is readily available everywhere. |
+1 ^PP proudly displaying ignorance on a thread about elite colleges. How ironic. But then, we are also talking about the dumbing down of elite colleges, so maybe ^PP fits right in. |
| I kind of like the fact that Jeff doesn’t censor the anti-Asian racism on this and other threads. People really need to know how racists think — it’s a real service, actually. |
If you count that musical. |
You make anti black post, then when you are called out in you cry anti Asian racism. |
You can think what you want about affirmative action but I am talking about the tone of the posts that are racists against black people. |
| To those who think there is still a bias against asian students, what percentage of asian students do you think they should make at top schools. |
And that is 100% OK. |
Fascinated by how this is okay, but then everyone harps about how we need the “best” students who are majority Asian. |
Right. It's by American standards. If you want a school that judges based only on test scores, there are plenty in Asia. |
