Does Gen Z really want children or not?

My kids (25 and 28) don't want children due to climate change. I'm glad about it, one thing less to worry about.

That's what I'm expecting in my family -- two kids, age 20 and 21. DD has long said she doesn't want kids, since she was in elementary school. DS does see himself having kids. But I'd guess he won't have them until he's older, like DH was 40 when DS was born.

My daughter is in her third year at an Ivy and this message is being pushed hard at her university.

It's been pushed for decades. In the late 90s, this was the messaging at TJHSST. A few of the girls find good husbands and have families, but too many wander the singles wasteland until their mid-30s before they settle for a much less accomplished guy. It's sad to see them now.

Same here. Two adult kids, one actively wants kids, the other has been unwavering since she could speak about being child-free. I do not expect or hope she changes her mind. It’s just so clearly not her path.

Isn’t it too early to tell?

Majorities in both groups say not having kids has made it easier for them to afford the things they want, have time for hobbies and interests, and save for the future. In the younger group, about six-in-ten also say not having kids has made it easier for them to be successful in their job or career and to have an active social life.

What on earth is the point of a career if not to provide for a family? I can't imagine a more soulless existence than wanting to consume more expensive goods and services over the joy of having a family.

My 26 year old says she would love to be a SAHM, at least for awhile, and have 4 kids. She's a school psychologist by trade, very maternal, and has always been a homebody who loves cooking/baking, home projects, crafts, organizing, and just hanging out at home. So probably not the norm.

She's also an introvert who says "I don't want to date, I just want to be three years married living in a house that looks like a cottage with the love of my life, a golden retriever, and a baby on the way." I hope that works out for her

I say this seriously…if she isn’t rich her kids will most likely resent her.

I as well as several posters from large families didn’t enjoy growing up scraping by. It sucked.

I spend a lot of time around Gen Z women and they truly despise men in a way millennial women didn’t. I’m a millennial, and while I wanted a career, I also wanted to find love and get married, and thought most men were genuinely good guys who just needed he right woman.

Most of the Gen Z women I’ve talked to are absolutely tired of men’s BS.

Even when I hit 28 and started dating men in their 30s, I overlooked things like having zero decor, not knowing how to cook, hanging up sheets instead of curtains, etc because I really thought men just needed the right woman’s love and they’d get it together. Gen Z women are disgusted by men like that and don’t put up with it.

I think Gen Alpha girls will grow up to have even higher standards. I divorced my DDs father because I was absolutely sick of his BS, so they’re growing up seeing that they don’t need to tolerate bad behavior.

We too chose adoption, due to climate change / overpopulation. 8 billion in the world, 400 million in the US alone. Ridiculous. Stop the breeding, grow the trees, let the animals come back.

You need to seriously educate yourself regarding worldwide declining birth rates. You sound like a moron.

The person would choose animals over humans. That's weird.
